Bkk Post Faves

While reading the thread about Trink I got to thinking of some favourites of mine from the Bangkok Post who have been retired. Am I alone in my fondness for the now defunct, 'Pai Tiaow with Nick and Noi' food column? What about Ung Ang Talay, who still writes about classical music, but seemingly no longer reviews restaurants. I used to love counting how many times UAT would refer to himself (herself?) in the course of a column. UAT this, UAT that....

I'd love to see Trink thrown to the curb in favor of bringing back good 'ol Nick and Noi! :o

I found UAT's food reviews amusing for the same reason. Written in early 20th-century 'schoolmarm English'.

And the way he would get all puffed up about some ordindary street Thai dish. A few times I let myself get suckered into going to the places he raved about, only to find them quiet ordinary. He also made occasional errors of fact with regard to Thai cuisine, e.g., how such-and-such a dish must contain such-and-such an ingredient or it wasn't 'authentic'. He didn't seem to understand how innovative and non-static Thai cuisine is, etc. His co-reporter Suthon Sukhphisit seems to have taken over this prescriptive/proscriptive approach to food writing for the Post.

I'm glad he's sticking to classical music reviews, as I don't know enough about the subject to be over-critical! :o

I heard the same person writes the DVD reviews, but I forget the silly pen name for that one.

By the way, does anyone know who 'Krissie Na Klongtoey' really is? He/she does gossipy people-oriented news items in the Post from time to time.

Does anybody remember old Uncle Ayomongkul who had a brilliant chatty column on Fridays about fifteen to twenty years ago. I have been searching for a collection of his writings ever since, but without success. (If you have any info, I'd be eternally grateful!)

I used to try and follow up U.A.T reccos.on Thai food until I realised that most Keo-wans ,Kwae-teos,Som tams all tasted the same (except Khun wifes -of course)Maybe as a last gesture U.A and B.T could get "a duay" and do a mixed review of a home cooked tin of "Dinty Moors" avec man farang, mushy peas with a cheeky covering of OXO and onion gravy. :D

Truely an oriential masterpiece and would be ideal during the long cold Thai winter. :o T.A.T. please note..

I used to love UAT's restaurant reviews, and really miss them. He led me to some really great places that I never would have found otherwise. He IS a he, by the way...an American who's been here a real long time. I wish they'd rejuvenate his weekly food column.

PvtDick, would you care to name one great place that UAT led you to? As I said in my earlier post, I was not all that impressed with what impressed him. He also didn't seem to go very far afield, almost everything seemed to be off Charoen Krung or in Yaowarat, maybe around his home turf.

By the way, although I'm not qualified to critique UAT's reviews of classical music, he seems to over-gush on those as well. It's like the point he's trying to make is not that X CD is so fantastic but rather he's saying 'Look, my ears are really something special, aren't they?' That's how I felt about the food reviews. 'You ordinary mortals probably wouldn't notice, but the phat thai at XXX is interstellar.' Just my opinion -- if you like that kind of writing, I respect that.

So I know who UAT really is, but how about Krissie Na Khlongtoey? Anyone know?
