I must go next month to Malaysia for a visa run, and I'm going by car.

Where shall I buy the malaysian compulsory car insurance, before the border, in the no man's land (I remember there are a few offices) or at the malaysian custom offices?

Also does anybody know how much for one or two weeks (I would like also to travel for a while)

Thanks

Hi buasaard,

Two things you must do before you drive in to Malaysia.

1. Assuming that you are driving in with a Thai Registration number.

You must print on/beside your Thai registration number the

English alphabet..... eg. ABC 1234/Songkhla or ABC 1234/Bangkok,

or what ever you location may be. Your motor dealer may help you

on that.

2. You must purchase a Malaysian "Third Party" motor insurance.

This policy can be bought at the Thai Malaysian border.

Ask around for advice......at the Thai side or the Malaysian side.

Most likely at the Malaysian side.

For my case when I drive in with my Malaysian car, I could buy the

the policy at my Malaysian side or even at the Thai side. For my

case, I usually puchase it for six months.

For one week or so, the price is around RM20.00 or RM30.00, more or

less.

Finally, make sure that you bring along your car ownership card.

Good luck and have a pleasant journey. " Choke di nah, krap ! "

Thanks Fox,

I have already the translation of the registration number (AA instead of "ko ko"), I am just worrying they don't let me enter in Malaysia if I don't get before the third party insurance.

Hi buasaard,

Glad to hear from you so soon. Yes, make sure that your

(translation)..... eg. AA 1234 followed by Bangkok (or whatever) is

printed in front and at the back of the car..... black painting.

For the Malaysian Motor car Third Party Insurance...... You can get it

at the Thai border check point, or you can get it at the Malaysian

side. When you reach the Thai-Malaysia check point...... if you are not

sure, don't cross over to the Malaysian side first. Park your car at

the Thai side.... then ask for information about the Malaysian car

insurance policy......they will be able to supply you all the info you

need. Ever day, thousands of vehicles, buses and so on passes through

the Danok (Thailand) and Bukit Kayu Hitam (Malaysia) border check

points. After crossing the Danok Immigration..... you can buy things at

the Malaysian Duty Free Shop. Then after that..... you will arrive at

the Malaysian Immigration, then police check point, then the Custom

check points. After that, you drive on for about a few km, then there

will be another final check point..... police anti smuggling unit.

After that, pleasant driving and obey the speed limit. There will be

" Radar/Photo " speed trap to catch speeding offenders..... very often.

So take care and enjoy driving on the new Super Double Lane highway....

all the way to Penang. Good luck and pleasant driving.

I have also read on this forum somewhere that if the car is not registered in your name then you must have written permission from the owner to be using the car.

Is this still valid. ?

Hi Thetyim.

Yes ! If the car is not registered in your name, you must get a letter from the owner..... giving you the permission to drive his car. Make sure that the owner's

signature tally with the owner's registration card. To play safe..... get a few copies from the owner (with his signature) ...... just in case. The Malaysian athorities are very cautious and quite fussy about it. In Malaysia your vehicle may be inspected

by three law enforcement agencies...... if the need arises, or as the case maybe.

The three enforcement agencies are : 1. Customs. 2. Police. 3. Road Transport Department. If all your papers/documents are in order....... you have no problem.

The reason is this. Every month, hundreds of cars are being reported stolen.

They are just doing their job, and be patient. Just a few months ago, my relative had his brand new Honda CRV stolen. Good luck and have a pleasant trip.
