Is there any way to change your european driverlicense to Thai or do I have to go and make the test in Phuket town??

Go to the test centre & get a copy of the current requirements for foreigners to get a driving license. The girl at the counter just inside the door will give you one. On the day you go & test you need to be early & prepared to spend a good part of the day there. There is both a written & a driving test. Prior to the test you have to watch a video which is in English for the foreign participants.

I had to do the reactiontest and the coulor test, took about five minutes.

After that, pay, photo, ready.

Got car and mc at the same time.

Cost: 450 THB including papers from imigration.

Took me one hour and 30 minutes from i came there.

I got my licenses about 3 years ago so the rules have not changed as long as you have a IDP.

Your first local license is for 1 year, when you renew its for 5 years and expires on your birth date.

You are supposed to watch the video to, but depends on what time of day you come I guess.

Anyway, for those who need to test theory and driving, it is very simple and both car and bike done in one full day. Must be there before 9am

When I first got my licence they gave me a road code in English to read 20 minutes before the test but nowadays you can view the video in English which should cover everything in the written test.

90 on the highways, and 120 on expressways (bkk area)

Watching the video and knowing the signs/road-paint is sufficient to pass

Right of way is as follows

The larger road has the right of way, IOW

1 digit Highway right of way over 2 digit Highway, over 3 digit Highway, over 4 digit local road, over any private road. Be aware of the huge amount of private roads, often to be spotted by the lack of Tessabaan garbage bins.

Only when 2 equal roads cross, like two 4 digit roads same width, vehicle from LEFT has the right of way

In circles, usually vehicles from the RIGHT(already in the circle) has the right of way, unless one of the roads is larger than the others giving it right of way

In addition the usual use of Yield and Stop signs, usually with additional road paint Stop line

What rules and regulations??? driving through red lights, no crash helmets, going as fast as you can, driving the wrong way none of these are enforced as far I have seen, but I have to say coming from the UK where everything is enforced and you pay big time for doing anything wrong, so for me its great here you just have to be carefull and concentration 100% of the time will save your life..
