Obviously there are no templates as every one's circumstances are different.

When writing the letter bear in mind that the ECO reads many such letters every day so initially will probably skip read it. Don't try an rewrite "War and Peace", make the letter reasonably short, ideally two pages, three at the most, and as snappy as possible.

Outline your relationship, how you met, how many times you have stayed with her in Thailand and your plans for the future, adding the details and reason for the trip.

In your girl friends covering letter, remember it's her application, not yours, she should also repeat the details of the relationship, why and when the trip is happening and the plans for the trip itself. She should explain her plans for the future re-enforcing the evidence that indicates she has commitments in Thailand, job, studies or a business which would indicate is likely to leave the UK at the end of her holiday.

Good luck, and come back if there is any specific advice either of you need, someone will try and help.

remember, you are the sponsor, not your mother

I wrote the letter as the sponsor when my wife applied, we did not bother getting her to repeat in a separate letter

don't skimp on the letter contents, if you have a lot to say, say it, there's no restriction on the length of your letter, my letter was about five typed A4 pages long

So there you go 'scoobyjay' you have conflicting advice, this will always happen in a forum such as this. Advice is given in good faith and you and your girlfriend must now decide how to proceed.

I'm sure 'jonzboy' will not mind responding in red, it just shows up better.

remember, you are the sponsor, not your mother

I'm not quite sure why this point has been made, in this case as you are not providing support, your mother is, it's imperative that you include details of your mothers willingness, reasons and ability to provide financial support to your girlfriends entry clearance application.

This is really up to the applicant, as I have said before it's your girlfriends application not yours, so it's up to her to convince the ECO that it's a genuine application, I would always advise the applicant enclosing a short covering letter.

This is a matter of choice, I have always taken the view that the sponsorship letter should be as short as possible whilst covering all the salient points, remember the sponsorship letter is a only small part of the application and contains no evidence. I would always recommend that any sponsor should try to limit their letter to two pages, three at the most, remember someone has to read the letter, as well as all the evidence, and will have to do so many times a day. 'jonzboy' clearly takes a different view advising that the letter can be as long as you like, he cites the example of five pages which worked for him. This is really for you to decide what will work best for you.

Good luck with the application

Thanks oldgit i was under the impression that if my mother was financing the cost of the visa then she would be the one to write out the sponsorship letter and i would need to also write a letter based on my relationship with my thai girlfriend

in your initial post you indicated that you were unsure who should write a letter of sponsorship, like I said, you are the sponsor, this is made clear in the VAF4A application form and accompanying guidance notes

if you need to prove other things like oldgit suggests, other letters may be needed to support your wife's application

I did not suggest your letter be "as long as you like" just reread what I said, it is perfectly clear, but perhaps not to oldgit

I have offered my advice, and yes, others may have different opinions and they are welcome to provide these, this can only be a good thing

at least I have stated that I have been through this process, completing a successful settlement visa application for my wife and I am always happy to help out others by sharing my experiences
