Old Croc
As Oz has had the ashes all those years, ole Dom is checking to make sure nobody has pinched the contents of the urn. We are descended from the Dodger lot as you know. Oz has had the ashes in name only. The recalciant poms refused to hand over the trophy on the grounds that it was fragile! It was ok for them to display the urn at the MCC, but it couldn't travel to Australia.

Thomas_Merton
England pegged back by Warne haul Fifth Test, The Oval, day one (stumps): England 319-7 v Australia Andrew Strauss showed the way with a superb 129 but Shane Warne's 5-118 meant honours were shared on a gripping first day of the deciding Ashes Test. England, 131-4 at one point, closed on 319-7 at The Oval thanks in large part to a 143-run fifth-wicket stand between Strauss and Andrew Flintoff (72). Strauss, whose seventh Test ton included 17 fours, was the first of three evening wickets to fall for 23. Warne bowled 34 overs in the day and claimed the first four England wickets. ozzydom
What I don't understand - I know getting run out is a bitch - is why Ricky P. threw such a wobbley after his dismissal? It was excessive, even given the heat of the moment. He's apologised and of course this is accepted, but there must be some reason why a Captain behaves in such a manner, over and above the emotional. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He believed the poms were cheating, or at least stretching the rules, by resting (rotating) the fast bowlers in the pavilion while using a specialist, fast substitute fielder who ran him out. Of course he should have complained to the umpires before, not after, the event because he now just looks like a pratt. I think it was a buildup of frustration because the umpires haven't helped Australia in its losing struggle. Two of the first innings lbws (including Ponting) were actually inside edges, and Flintoff was out plumb lbw for 8 and not given. He made a hundred. Things like this (inc. the runout) can change a close game to a rout. And if you combine it with the fact that he can't win a toss and bat first on the dead pitches it would piss anyone off. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> While I agree with you in principal, I think that the bad umpireing decisions have been pretty even throughout. Pontings LBW, was never an inside edge, though Martin was twice had by that trick. What I did not understand as well, was the calling of the third umpire in a catch scenario. That just doesn't happen. Not unless the rules have changed. Saying that, I do believe that all dismissals should be thouroughly veriacated before a batsman is given out, or not out , in disputed circumstances. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Both teams made an agreament before the series started that catches would not be reffered to the third umpire and it would be left to the fielders honesty as to whether the catch was taken cleanly or not. Given the number of bad decisions for both sides re inside edges and lbws , probably now they should be using the third umpire to determine if there was an edge or not. Same applies to the catches where its hard to tell if the ball came of the gloves or the body. BTW Well done England. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> An honest Pom, turn it up. Ponting made the request for that agreement but Vaughn turned it down.

Thomas_Merton
Light hits confident Aussie start Fifth Test, The Oval, day two (bad light): England 373 v Australia 112-0 Australia openers Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden shared their first century stand of the summer in reply to England's 373 in the fifth Test. But bad light stopped play just after tea with Australia 112-0. Langer, who was dropped off Paul Collingwood on 53, was 75 not out and Hayden on 32. Giles earlier hit a dogged 32 and Steve Harmison crashed 20 not out to lift England from 325-8 at one point. Giles was last man out, lbw to Shane Warne, who took 6-122. Thomas_Merton
FIFTH TEST - MATCH SUMMARY (The Oval, Day 3): England 373 v Australia 138-0 Players were forced from the field after 35 minutes of play on day three of the decisive Ashes Test between England and Australia at The Oval. Australia added 26 to their overnight 112-0 - 235 runs behind - after the resumption was delayed by half an hour. Justin Langer (86) survived a huge lbw appeal first ball from Matthew Hoggard before both he and Matthew Hayden (47) escaped clear run-out chances. England need only a draw to win the Ashes for the first time in 19 years.
