High-speed train linking Thailand, Laos and China to start next year

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban is prepared to discuss with China and Laos over the country’s first high-speed railway linking the three countries.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban stated prior to his recent visit to China to attend the World congress on speed train and conference. He would take this opportunity to discuss with his counterparts from China and Laos the issue of the high-speed train project which would link the three countries’ borders together.

According to Suthep, the project is a planned joint venture between Thailand and China. Thailand would stand to benefit from the project, given China’s advanced technology and rail management knowledge. Once completed, this high-speed train would travel at the speed of 200 kilometer per hour. However, some differences needed to be ironed out and details finalized in order for the project to kick off next year.

The project would greatly contribute to boosting up the tourism sectors of the three countries, as well as making transportation between nations more accessible.

Remote District Gets Electricity for the First Time

The remote district of Umphang, in the western province of Tak is seeing the installation of electrical poles that will carry municipal power to the area for the first time.

For the past 30 years, residents there have been relying on power generators.

Tak provincial electricity officers installed electrical poles and power lines at the 115th kilometer of Mae Sod Umphang road, saying that the electricity is a New Year's gift for Umphang district residents following a 3 decade long plea from villagers who have no electricity.

The project started in October and is expected to end on December 15. Residents are being promised that they'll be enjoying the long awaited power source by January 1, 2011.

Authorities said the power is coming from the Bhumibol Dam in Tak province.

Umphang district chief Chawengsak Jaikam said residents are so lucky to finally have access to power from the Bhumibol Dam after they have been relying on local generators for more than 30 years.

There are around 7,300 houses in Umphang, where household generators often destroy people's electrical appliances when the power is down.
