Saudi Clerics Declare Football Un-Islamic

It’s official: football is un-Islamic.

And don’t you forget it.

"LAHORE: Ulema in Saudia Arabia have issued a fatwa (religious decree) declaring football an un-Islamic sport, and have urged the youth to quit it immediately, BBC radio reported on Saturday.

According to the report, the clerics urged the youth to indulge in jihad and other constructive activities that could help the Muslim ummah, the radio reported. The ulema argued that football wastes a lot of time and the participants wear shorts, which they said was an un-Islamic dress, the radio reported.

Following the decree, some players of the famous Taif Football Club have quit the game, the report added."

Now I understand why we get spat upon if we wear shorts here, the theory was that only gays wear shorts.

If the ulema would teach their youth some skills besides koran recitation they could find a job easily and would not have to waste their time playing football.

Besides I don't think Saudi youth will give a fvk cause football is very popular in Saudi.

This puts a bit of a damper on our friend Taksin's idea to install cable TV in the 'restive' south so the kids can watch football rather than shooting or beheading each other.

Oh well, another plan bites the dust.

No one makes them wear shorts - I think it would be very 'entertaining' watching them running around in robes and berkers (yes I know only the women wear them).

I know, lets make a version where they can wear full dress robes and kick a plastic ball loaded with Samtex and six inch nails - much more Islamic. Handball = hand cut off; fouls mean the family are consulted and asked if they would like the offending player beheaded on the 'penalty' spot.

I thought everybody in the UK considered soccer and "football" to be the same ?

They don't make soccer balls out of pigskin do they ? Just the "balls" used in the Canadian/American style "football".

In that style of football, you don't see too many people running around in shorts (more like armoured rhinos).

Rugby and soccer players (and basketball ) players wear shorts (and tennis, ping pong, badminton, ect).

Saudis would never make good hockey players though. In hockey, even the goons have to know how to skate a little bit (and stay on their feet during a fight).

I can just see the Saudi National Hockey team, each player with a personal assistant on the bench, personal heaters, chauffeured golf carts to get them to/from the dressing rooms, stand-ins to sit in the penalty box for them, and death penalties for goalie that loses the game !
