I manage just about any file with BetterZip. www.MacItBetter.com

Shareware, but there are numbers out there.

Double click on a ZIP file and it expands - that's built in to OS X.

Right click on a file or folder and select "Compress [file name]" to create a ZIP archive of the file or folder.

Most of the time, those two actions are really all you need. Certainly enough to "open zip files". No extra software needed.
