Swimming Coach in Countersuit Over Sexual Assault Allegations
File photo for reference only A swimming coach in Nonthaburi near Bangkok has denied accusations of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old female trainee during a session at a condominium pool, launching a countersuit for alleged defamation. The case unfolds as both parties present conflicting narratives surrounding the interactions during training. The trainee, whose identity remains protected, filed a complaint with Bang Sri Mueang Police, alleging inappropriate contact by the coach. She asserts that during a training session, the coach touched her waist excessively and stood too closely, claiming he attempted proximity with his genitals. Feeling uncomfortable, she ceased the session and fled, later sharing video evidence with law enforcement and news outlets. In footage aired by Channel 7, the coach is seen positioned behind the woman as she practised freestyle swimming. While supporting her claims, the woman also alerted a Facebook group administrator for swimming coaches, resulting in the coach's removal from the group. Defending his actions in a Channel 7 interview, the coach maintained that his conduct aligned with standard teaching practices. He noted that physical contact is a norm for instructional purposes in swimming, and emphasised that the video shared publicly was not complete. He further argued that his proximity was intended for verifying correct breathing techniques. In response, the coach has filed a countersuit, alleging defamation and unlawful dissemination of information under Thailand's Computer Crime Act, contesting the allegations which he claims damage his reputation. As legal proceedings unfold, the police have yet to reach a conclusion or levy charges against either party. Both individuals are expected to provide further statements to clarify the incident. Reflecting on the situation, former national swimmer and current coach Arwut “X” Chinnapasaen advised potential trainees to thoroughly vet swimming coaches by checking their credentials and permits, underscoring the importance of trust and professionalism in coaching relationships, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18 -
