The 3.3Ritcher quake, which rattled Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district late on Tuesday night, was merely a tremor resulting from energy being released along an active fault line, deputy spokesman for the Northern Meteorological Centre said yesterday.

Adisorn Foongkhajorn said the quake, which only caused panic among residents but no casualties or injuries, had come from the fault line in Mae Chan. When asked if a major earthquake, like the one that struck Christchurch recently,

might hit Thailand, he said countries with active fault lines faced an equal amount of risk. However, he confirmed that the Meteorological Department had the tools to detect and watch for quakes round the clock.

Director of Chiang Mai University's Seismic Research Centre, Sampan Singharajwarapan, said the Mai Ai quake was normal because the fault in Mae Chan regularly releases energy that is at the 34 Richter scale. However, he urged authorities to inspect all buildings for safety in case a stronger quake hits areas along Thailand's fault lines.

It is usually the scientific articles that are the most humorous in the Thai papers.

The quake was caused by energy, wow, what else causes earthquakes?

But the like the part about the fault regularly releasing energy at 34 on the Richter scale.

I can't believe I haven't felt one of those yet, I must be a hard sleeper.
