maybe they were just "lent to another unit" along with the lawn mower and the wipper snipper.

Some official staements sound like they come from 3 year olds.

How the hell can the weapons go missing, surely they have an Armoury?

I was in the U.S. Army for 20 years and never saw weapons stolen. It's easier to get into a bank than the weapons room on a U.S. military base.

Obviously you're not a Viet Nam vet? I routinely went to supply and com-shawed anything I wanted including guns. As well when you couldn't get it from the Army you could go down to Tu Do street and get it. Perhaps you had your eyes taped shut?

Accountability is the main problem here. The military controls the government, not the other way round, and the military is just as corrupt, inept and useless as any other branch of Thai society with few exceptions.

Yes I agree with the fact that accountability is the problem. But because nobody is accountable to anyone for anything except for the "TEA MONEY". Everyone wants their piece of the pie, but they don't want to do anything for it. GRAFT, in my opinion, is the biggest problem in Thailand. And by eliminating GRAFT the other problems will become smaller if not gone.

Sounds like America to me.

Same as always. But the Army spokesman seem to be a good guy and professional at his statements. Same time he is very brave as he confronted to the group oh higher ranked officers who claimed all was mistake in counting.

actually this is my point...Have you ever seen these military amouries? Unless i was drunk and quite possibly I was they are like forts, solid walls with security everywhere, I smell another Thai RAT here and I fairly sure that no red, yellow or even the mysterious black shirt could not even get close to these places, there is NO WAY any right minded person should attend any of the up coming Red Shirt protests as i really do think this is another sick plan or a very sick government.....I like most others just hope and call for sanity to prevail but I am rapidily losing hope....again...sadly...

Your opinion to which you are entitled. Sure a government / army conspiracy, like the theft a few months ago. Read Robert A.'s report, more of the same.

On the other hand maybe it was some of those military leaning redwards, K. Jatuporn mentioned the other day they have some. Maybe just usual Thai entrepeneurs seeking a profit by selling stuff. Maybe another reason.

Sorry, my crysal ball is on the blink again. Probably need to replace the batteries ;)

"Probably need to replace the batteries" ?? ... and a bit more besides.

Dear "wondering type", I'm wondering why you bothered to post a comment at all.

Would seem that some army personel have gone missing at the same time as the weapons.

Could they have been stolen too by the reds, yellows, southern insurgents, whoever?

Or could it just have been that they saw an opportunity to make some serious money and get out of the army at the same time?

Was not some army type arrested for the last lot of weapons that went missing from Lopburi.

Assuming the missing men were the ones supposed to be looking after the weapons then it probably wouldnt have been very difficult for them to hide the disapearance of the weapons, easier in fact than hideing their own disapearance.

If the Thai military can't even secure a personal weapons how on gods earth will they ever protect the country?

It is the perfect excuse to save face should Cambodia invade and beat Thailand....

"It is not our fault, if only our weapons had not been stolen"

Police said troops on duty found that the guns have gone missing...

Wow, must have been on some serious duty there. :bah:

Maybe they meant they were away, doing their duty (#1 and #2):whistling:

The fun part of all these strange stories is that the truth never becomes known. Therefore it always comes down to speculation here on TV. If I were a betting man, and having lived here many years, I would say the weapons were sold out the back door. TIT. The other possibility that the army is so inept that weapons can just walk away is actually even more frightening.

UPDATE

Missing Weapons Case Blamed on Misunderstanding

I see the problem was one of accountancy not accountability. Looks like the whistle blower was outranked or outgunned by the racketeer.

Posted

If I remember correctly another armory robbery/shortage was dismissed as a inventory snafu after the fact. This seems to be where the blame will be placed, as its appears to satisfy any inquiry.

The real questions will have to be addressed when the troops line up for issue of weapons and they are given slingshots and even the ball bearing ammo has gone missing.

Are we sure those reported fighter jet crashes are not another inventory adjustment????

Weapons cache missing from Thai army arsenal: Army

BANGKOK: -- Thai Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd on Friday confirmed that a large number of weapons are missing from the armory of the 1st Infantry Battalion at the Royal Thai Army Infantry Centre in Pran Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Col Sansern said the army reported the weapons disappearance to the police.

He said a number of weapons were unaccounted for during the duty handover of the 1st Infantry Battalion commander in January.

It is possible that the weapons are missing or were distributed to other units without all items being recorded in the inventory, or it could be both ways, he said.

Col Sansern however ruled out theft, saying there was no sign of any intrusion, assuming that the missing weapons might have been the result of corruption or negligence.

He said that the case is being investigated by the police.

Meanwhile, army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha ordered an immediate investigation among all agencies concerned.

The weapons reportedly missing were 30 M16 assault rifles and more than 100 other weapons -- Belgian-made Minimi light machineguns, 11mm handguns and 60mm mortars -- and a large quantity of assorted ammunition.

1st Infantry Battalion commander Lt Col Manorot Suthisamdaeng realised about the missing and reported it to Pran Buri police on Thursday night.

Lt Col Supachai Yokanit, who had been battalion commander since 2009, may also be subject to investigation. (MCOT online news)

Every army around the globe loses weaponry unfortunately. Some classics include a vial of nerve agent, several hundred thousand ak-47s that for some reason were under the watchful eyes of a western military, a hundred or so lost by a european military, hundreds of thousands by another european power. Better not get into the disappeared nukes.

is it not strange that those weapons can be 'stolen' so easily ? aren't they supposed to be stored in secure bunkers ?

I guess this is in inside job, some poor soldiers wanting to ear a bit on the side? same as all those governement workers abusing the health care system by going 10x per month to the hospital, getting free meds that are expensive and selling them worth 30.000 baht per month ?

Those weapons were never stolen !

The army officer who went to police received a wrong inventory list.

Meanwhile they found the hundreds of weapons and this was confirmed by a general from the army.
