Hi dunger

Do you all ready have some experience with "cheap" car rentals? I only have some experience from the Hua Hin area where cheap car rental also means cheap service: old model, dirty car, tank empty, no maintenance done, no safety equipment (ABS, airbags).

We have tried then a Honda CRV from AVIS which was indeed not cheap, but you got the full service as in Europe or in the USA: 2010 top model, clean, tank full.

This is only my advice - it is you choice, of course!

You want to rent a car in Bangkok and drive to Chiang Mai over to Udon then back to Bangkok. You had better stick with a reputable car rental dealer or you WILL get the shaft.

I used fastcarhire.co.uk to find a rental at 'Thai Rent a Car' for my last road trip and found their prices to be reasonable and their service quite good. I think the Thaivisa car rental link uses them too.

They even pick up and drop off the car pretty much wherever you want for free if you rent for more than 3 days. Airports in different cities no problem.

I often book a car thru Fastcar Hire from Oz. Never been a problem. U may be able to get cheaper rates when u arrive tho .

I used Thai Rent a Car for a trip from Chiangmai to Bangkok a couple of years ago, booked from Australia, price was good, car was great, services was great.

I had need rent a car a couple of times when I first started working here, both times ended up back at Thai Rent a Car after researching again. I agree with the previous post... if you're doing a road trip to Chiangmai, don't go with a "rent a wreck"! (But highly recommend doing that trip... but take your time and enjoy... and get al the way up to Chiangrai and the Golden Triangle if you have time. Enjoy.
