River overflow floods villages in eastern Java, Indonesia

2011-03-25 06:40:20 GMT+7 (ICT)

MOJOKERTO, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Three villages in Java, Indonesia were flooded due too river overflows, local media reported Thursday.

The Lamong River in the Dawarblandong subdistrict of Mojokerto, East Java, submerged the villages of Talun, Banyulegi, and Pulorejo since early Thursday, but authorities said the flooding would naturally recede in the next two or three days, Indonesia's Antara news agency reported.

The flood waters took the villages by surprise as they came earlier than expected, causing families to abandon their inundated houses and seek refuge in buildings and higher grounds. Some residents took refuge at local mosques and village community centers.

As of Thursday evening, no casualties had been reported.
