corkman Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Hi All, I enjoy going to beer bars, and I enjoy bringing my out-of-town mates to them too. Sukhumvit - between say Nana and Thong Lor would be my "play ground", but I am sort of sick of both NEP and Cowboy. Recently I re-visited an old spot that I used to go to quite often - Suk Soi 7/1. Is there anywhere else along Suk that is a similar atmosphere and set up? I should add, I have not "explored" every soi and every sub-soi, so it is quite likely that there are some god spots that I know nothing about...... and I'm not especially into places like the Londoner, Australian, Coyote, etc. Cheers, CM
IanForbes Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Take a bus down to Pattaya and set up shop there. The Nana - Soi Cowboy started going downhill rapidly about 10 years ago. They cut down on the acts and raised the prices to ridiculous levels... using the old Thai method of business... If things go bad and people stop coming then raise your prices to chase the tourists away even quicker.
TobiasMattsson Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 My favorite beer-drinking bar is at Soi 7/1, Down Under Bar. I remembered that place from 2006 and last time I was in Bngkok last year I had my daily (a couple or dozens) beers watching and surprisingly enjoying cricket and having a meat pie with ketchup and bbq sauce. Great guys and Rob is hilarious! Always having his daily rum/coke... Sure, NEP aint what it was but after sitting drinking my beers at DUB I always end up at Morning & Night at Soi 4. Terrific DJ that plays the greatest rock music. The last evening he gave me and a friend a couple of shots on his tab. :jap: When they close I go to the corner of Suk/Rama on the Soi Cowboy side where I sit get my share of Jack/coke. I always bay for 3 (300 and get 5. Great guy and fun people there at the small sidewalk bar.
corkman Posted April 29, 2011 Author Posted April 29, 2011 A month on, and I am just getting round to replying! Bars on Soi 7/1 - yes, generally I quite like them. I know the Down Under Bar (Kiwi place, right?) - that is exactly the kind of places I am looking for. Couple of decent / interesting expat or tourist blokes to chat with, and a few nice friendly but not OTT girls to sooth the eyes, shall we say..... Only thing about Soi 7/1 is that they get to know you quite quickly, and since it is a cul-de-sak soi, you sort of feel guilty walking past one bar to go to another.... LOL.... Are there any other places that anyone can think of..... it need not necessarily be a full street of bars..... a few within a couple of minutes walk from one another is good enough..... just as long as they are fun, easy going, and not "I sit wit you handsome man, you buy me drink, you buy my friend drink......." and all that..... pleasent and easy company is what I'm after when I just want to get away from my usual haunts and usual social / socio-professional circles. Hillary bar on Soi 11 is a good example of such a spot..... although it is somewhat isolated from other similar places. Any other tips?
rott Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Have you ever tried the Bus stop bar on Soi 4, or Jools bar on the same soi? The latter is best between 5 and 8.
smokie36 Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I'm going to recommend the Offshore Bar mainly because of the comfy seats but also for less commendable(on my part...not the bar's) reasons I can't post here.
