Report Sa Kaeo Border Scare: Governor Quells Casino Layoff Rumours
Picture courtesy of Sa Kaeo public relations office Chaos erupted at the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo as throngs scrambled to cross amid closure rumours. Thai and Cambodian nationals rushed to their homelands amid buzz of casinos in Poipet laying off Thai workers due to escalating cross-border tensions. This panic follows recent unsynchronised adjustments in border operating hours causing confusion. Long one of the busiest crossings, Ban Khlong Luek now observes a Thai-side schedule from 8am to 4pm, differing from Cambodia's 9am to 4pm. Sa Kaeo governor, Prinya Phothisat, visited to reassure crowds, dismissing afternoon closure rumours and affirming continued operation per the revised timetable. The governor blamed misinformation for igniting premature exits. Governor Prinya stressed coordination efforts between Thai and Cambodian officials to harmonise opening hours. He urged the public to rely on official channels to prevent unnecessary panic. The Burapha Task Force, with immigration officers and soldiers, was deployed to maintain order and ensure smooth functioning at the border. Adding to confusion, Cambodian authorities unexpectedly closed their immigration checkpoint in Pailin province, near Chanthaburi's Ban Phak Kad crossing, at 10am. Temporary permission allowed passage for transport vehicles and people before the checkpoint closed again, eventually announcing restricted cargo gate functions by noon while allowing pedestrian passage. This unfolding drama at the Thai-Cambodian border underscores the administrative hiccups impacting cross-border travel. Coordination between authorities is paramount to reducing disruptions, as maintaining calm and clear communication remains critical amid heightened tensions. The revised operational hours at checkpoints highlight the need for ongoing dialogue between neighbouring nations. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-06-14 -
