I don't know how Unblock-us works technically, other than how the user sets it up on their router or PC by using Unblock's own DNS settings..

However, regarding Negreanu's comment above, I've encountered two different types of streaming providers.... as follows..

There are some...that once the initial IP authentication has been made, will continue to play and operate even if the proxy or VPN drops out sometime during that initial use, even if its replaced midstream by a non U.S. connection...

But then there are others.... Hulu for one comes to mind...that pretty much will stop almost immediately if the connection changes from a U.S. one to a non-U.S. one mid-stream...because of a proxy or VPN disconnect...

So I'm not sure how that latter situation fits with the way Negreanu is describing Unblock's handling as only dealing with the initial IP authentication.

As Witopia has been mentioned in this thread I thought I would take a look at what they offer , on the following PROS and CONS list , I am wondering about the part shown in red

Witopia VPN PROS:

• 30 Day money back guarantee

• Large server network in 17 countries

• Unlimited Switching

Witopia VPN CONS:

• Fair support

• Could use off shore servers in the Americas

• Software standard OpenVPN with NO features and user un-friendly & inconvenient

• No automation on start up

• No automatic choice of fastest server (lowest latency)

• Dynamic IPs and Static IPs not available

Does not protect your originating IP if the internet connection fails. All your applications will be switched to your local IP and you may not know it – an OpenVPN problem that is fixed by the better VPN services.

• Does not support IPv6

• Logs and stores personal information – typical US based privacy policy which is not that private or secure

• Management and server network is predominantly located in USA

Any one care to comment about the PROS and CONS list and especially the red part , or offer a better alternative VPN ?

Thanks :jap:

It seems that the same problem of a VPN subscriber loosing their secure internet connection and not knowing they have been automatically reverted back to their normal internet connection and local IP , could be common problem with many VPN providers.

I asked Witopia about this , and here's their reply ...

Does not protect your originating IP if the internet connection fails. All your applications will be switched to your local IP and you may not know it an OpenVPN problem that is fixed by the better VPN services.

This is a tricky question. Let me ask you this, would you prefer your vpn program took over control of your commputer and did not allow it to pass any data unless it sensed and approved the connection? This would seem to be more of a security risk then a helper. Also, what happens when your firewall or security program updates and the software in the vpn does not play nice with it? What happens when windows makes a routing error and misreports to the software the connected status? How would it then know to stop or start the internet connection? We have talked about modifying the program to support this, but for the most part our clients do not want this so we have not added it. We offer a visual representation of connected or not.

So are they saying if your VPN connection drops , you see a visual indicator to tell you , and you are not automatically

re connected to your normal local internet IP to continue the connection .

Very late response on this but I tried unblockus with my True 16Mbps connection. It worked for a a day or so but then, I was unable to log on to BBC iPlayer without the "not available in your country" message. I asked Unblockus support and they told me that the service would only work with an IP beginning with 58.XX.XX. This was their reply:

The problem is that your provider ("True") has some kind of selective transparent proxy or DNS hijacking for some IP's and don't have it for others.

Last week your IP was 58.* and everything was working, but it stopped working once you've got 115.*.

You can try to reset your router few times and check if you can get 58.* back, but this is not a solution. Unfortunately we can't suggest any real solutions for your provider, but you can check with them and see if it's possible to get static IP (it was a solution in New Zealand)

Since then, I signed up for a StrongVPN Open SSL account but, for the UK, it's awful. Stuttering on almost everything I try to watch. The BBC diagnostics page says my download speed is 13Mbps but streaming is another matter altogether. Really inconsistent stream speeds so I'm using the 7 day cancellation later on today.

According to the connection log, the connection to the UK seems to go through San Francisco. Maybe my assumptions are wrong but that seems rather daft given it's a trip of over 10,000km. Feel free to correct me !

I have been using overplay.net for a few years now. it seems the best so far. I am using a DD-WRT router so I can use my roku box. overplay is simple to use and netflix works great, but Hulu iis hit or miss on how good it will work. The SMART DNS thing is not working with my roku box not sure why. with my laptop hooked up to the TV and if SMART DNS is working I tend to get HD a bit more often, but still not often enough to make it worth while ot use my laptop over the Roku box.

I would love to hear more updates on what people are using and what ISP they have. I have 3BB 9 MB plan, I lowered it from 16 MB and do not notice much difference in the speed. I had 3BB premiere before and it was good, but now I enjoy higher speeds during off peak times then what the 5MB premiere gave me and during the peak usage time my speed does not slow down that much, although the last few days I have noticed more of a slow down.

I seen several from here use Strong VPN. that was my first one and they was very goood at first then it become very slow. I use unlockusa DNS something for some time after that and that worked fine, but made local sites slow from the long ping times to the DNS servers and I wanted a VPN service to be able to check some sites that maybe be blocked and unblocked often from Thailand so a complete VPN is what I needed, to bad the SMART from overplay does not work well with my new Roku box.

ok just an update form me I wold love to hear some updates form others and how the streaming is going. I do not do download shows anymore I just use Hulu and netflix and it seems to work out great, if I want something that neither of those have then I can download it.

Did you try changing the server location with Strong VPN?

Never had a problem with them.

Me neither...tomorrow makes one year with StrongVPN...been great service....I renewed for another year ($55) just a few days ago. And a few days ago when I was wondering when my renewal invoice would show up I used their online chat session two different times to ask about the invoice and another time to update my address. In both cases, their customer service reps began the chat with me within a minute of me opening the chat session....they were knowledgeable and answered my questions without runaway. Hope my second year with StrongVPN goes as good.

Means the VPN is not hardened and will switch back to local internet if it fails to connect with the VPN network.

I have some questions.

I have Roku now(no vpn router yet) and I use StrongVpn. But my max. download speed is only 0.5 Mbps from StrongVpn. I use True 10Mb cable modem. The download speed test from San francisco server is 1.5MBps. What should i get if i want to watch Netflix or Hulu Plus thur Roku? Why my StrongVpn speed is so slow even the StrongVPN customer support try to set up using pptp, L2tp and openvpn but the speed still not exceed 0.5 mbps. Should i change vpn company? what is the recommendation? Please advice how to watch netlfix on Roku. Thank you

I watch Netflix, Hulu and others similar via a VPN from U.S.-based Witopia.net. The service has been pretty good and reliable, and at a reasonable price. That's running thru a 10 Mb True Online cable connection in BKK.

The evening hours can tend to be a bit choppy for streaming, especially on weekends (not just for VPN streaming but everything Internet related here). But generally speaking, it's perfectly useable. Depending on the service and when I'm using it, I'll also choose the lower bandwidth setting to enable a smoother, non-buffering stalls playback.

With Witopia, you can choose and change any server city anytime without restriction, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Beach and a variety of others across many countries. They now even have a server in BKK, although that does nothing toward obtaining a U.S. IP address. Their basic service also allows you to choose and change between the different kinds of VPN connections (Open SSL, PPTP, IPSec).

In my speed tests, the PPTP always tends to run faster than Open SSL... Witopia used to have an L.A. based private proxy server than was even faster and better for streaming than any of their VPN services (although it was included for free in their VPN subscriptions). But right now, they've taken the proxy server offline, and no word on when it will be restored. Because the proxy server had no encryption, unlike the VPN services, it always ran faster for streaming uses.

The other general advice to offer for things like Netflix and Hulu is to always look for West Coast based VPN or proxy servers, as opposed to those elsewhere in the country, because the shortest distance from here to there (Thailand to West Coast U.S.) is generally going to produce the fastest bandwidth -- all other things being equal.

I'm not sure what the perceived importance of the above issue is.... But I've been using Witopia for several years now, and only extremely rarely have I ever had an existing VPN connection suddenly drop/fail.

There have been times when one server in some location is unavailable, and in those circumstances, you can't connect. So you simply pick another city/server.

But as for the core question, it's correct that if you have a Witopia VPN connection and it does drop/fail for some reason, their system doesn't somehow automatically connect you to a replacement server. Your connection will revert back to your local Thailand-based ISP.

I read on unblock us website that service cannot be used with True ISP?

There have been a variety of reports over time by different users here on TV of having problems with True ISP and the Unblock US service.

worked fine on TRUE for me when I took advantage of the free trial.

What exactly on TRUE would stop unblock us from working?

See post #37 above from Hardened Soul... I believe the issue he recounts in his post has been the one raised previously re True, their use of varying dynamic IP addresses for their regular customers, and Unblock US.

Very late response on this but I tried unblockus with my True 16Mbps connection. It worked for a a day or so but then, I was unable to log on to BBC iPlayer without the "not available in your country" message. You can try to reset your router few times and check if you can get 58.* back, but this is not a solution. Unfortunately we can't suggest any real solutions for your provider, but you can check with them and see if it's possible to get static IP (it was a solution in New Zealand)

I see.. I must have missed that. I have been with true for a few years now and have never had issue with DNS hijacking from them. I do know for a fact that it will stop unblock us from working as a mate of mine in NZ has this issue with his ISP and it's not hit/miss it's all the time.

I will start paying more attention to my IP but I don't think I can ever recall seeing my IP start with 58.

In fact, it usually starts with 124. like right now

incidentally, dynamic IP's are quite common and in no way impede with how unblock us works. Hijacked DNS will though.

tunlr.net works with True.

From the Tunlr blog:

DNS traffic shaping will slow down your Internet

Posted on June 13, 2012 by Tunlr

Since too many users are using our DNS servers in a permanent fashion, we have to introduce some form of traffic shaping in order to make the permanent use of our DNS servers less attractive with the ultimate goal to keep Tunlr a free service. We’re going to implement artificial response delays and tighten the existing request rate-limiters on our DNS servers. This is going to slow down internet surfing a lot (!) for anyone who’s permanently using Tunlr’s DNS servers.

As stated in our FAQ, we’re recommending to use Tunlr’s DNS servers only on a temporary basis while accessing geo-restricted services.

Transparent proxy with true rather than dns hijacking. Speedtest.net 36ms ping times to US show the proxy in action

I'm not denying that true uses a transparent proxy but that is not what breaks UNblock us. It's the dns hijack which I was unaware that true even did.

Re the Tunlr service above, I'm not sure I'd want to re-route my main desktop PC's DNS settings through Tunlr all the time.

But in noodling around, I did follow Tunlr's instructions for setting up an Android device with their service, by modifying the advanced settings for my home wifi connection. In other words, I didn't change anything about my home router or home wifi, but I did change the DNS settings on my Android mobile for when it connects to my home wifi, to use the Tunlr DNS settings.

And, to Tunlr's credit, having my Android phone running with the modified Tunlr DNS settings for wifi gave my Android phone immediate access to services like Netflix and Pandora -- without any other VPN or proxy services. I watched a Netflix video and listened to some Pandora music on my Android mobile at home this morning running off my home wifi, and it played fine.

On the other hand, tried the same set-up with Google's Play Movies app and Hulu Plus, and couldn't get either to work, at least not initially.

Here's the Tunlr instructions for setting up their service on an Android device, ICS or better:

http://tunlr.net/get-started/get-started-with-android/

PS - The Tunlr website says their Android settings will only work with ICS OS or higher... But after getting the service to work on my ICS mobile phone, I then tried the same settings changes on my Honeycomb OS Android tablet, and they also worked fine as well. Don't have any Gingerbread devices to check it on anymore.
