I have “Snooker 147” by JHC Software which I occasionally play. On my previous laptop it ran perfectly. On my new laptop it plays but is very jerky when the snooker balls move quickly, unlike the very smooth experience of my previous laptop.

My old laptop was an Asus A8Sc with Intel Dual Core, nVidia 8400 Graphics Card, using XP.

New laptop is an Asus X42J with Intel i3, ATI Mobility Radeon Premium Graphics using Win 7.

Is there anything I can tweak to get a smoother experience?

Many thanks Supernova.

The ATI Mobility Radeon Premium Graphics card I have is the HD 6470M (1GB). -sorry I should have mentioned that but was unaware that the X42J is sold with differing Graphic Cards.

After checking your helpful link for the HD 5470 I Googled the HD 6470M for drivers but only found for XP, not Win 7.

AMD don't even list the HD 6470M graphics card on their drop down menu on their website!

Does this mean I will have to revert to XP just to get the driver for the HD 6470M to work? I was told this new Asus was designed to use Win 7.

I do hope I haven't bought yet another pain in the ar5e laptop which I can't use the way I want. My old Asus's nVidia Graphics Card overheated and was not possible to repair under warranty, so Asus took it back in part exchange against this new X42J.

Any cheeky chance of a new link for the HD 6470M Supernova? I just get a 404 error when I try to access dlcd.asus.com not using your link.

Thanks a lot Supernova. I’ll give these a try.

A couple of further questions, which may sound stupid but I’m not really into computers.

Will I cause any additional problems by opening and running them all? (like how it would if I have more than one anti-virus program installed).

So, should I try one first then delete it before trying the next, or just install them all at the same time hoping one will solve the prob?

I’m wary about messing around with stuff I don’t really understand.

No -- but why would you want to do that? Unlike AV software, you can only use one set at a time.

Do keep in mind, not all display drivers are created equal; hence there are many versions to choose from. The holy grail for most hardcore gamers is to find that one set that offers the best gaming performance (FPS) and good image quality.

So, should I try one first then delete it before trying the next, or just install them all at the same time hoping one will solve the prob?

You should always uninstall any previous versions first. Most display drivers include an uninstall facility, so use that. If you're like me, you'll take it one step further by also running Driver Sweeper in safe-mode.

Hey Supernova, thanks for the explanation. You maybe realise from my questions that I’m not as conversant with all this as I should be!

I really appreciate your help and tips and all the links.

Install drivers for your graphics card.

Download:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

supernova is this the same as the ATI catalyst to update your drivers from AMD.

I have an asus a42j with this graphics card.

the amd download is 86MB and your link download is 238MB.

Just wondering which one is the best.

thanks

The one from ASUS contains drivers for both Windows XP and Windows 7 (32/64 bits) rolled into a single package.

OEM supplied drivers may also include manufacturer specific settings and other software that isn't available in the "regular" Catalyst package. Other than that, the drivers are more or less the same. I tend to favor these over reference versions.

Just wondering which one is the best.

That depends.

Choose the one that offers you the best performance.

Thanks supernova. I'll check it out as I just updated my ATI catalyst and my HDMI output to my TV seems to have dropped in quality.

All I can say about ATI drivers is that they've been sh*t for as long as I can remember, which is unfortunate since ATI do make very good graphics cards. This is not to say NVIDIA don't have issues, but when it comes to display drivers, NVIDIA is light-years ahead of ATI.

Just recently, I bought the Radeon HD 5670; not the best for gaming but excellent for HTPC usage. Installed drivers included with the card, only to discover hardware acceleration (DXVA) wasn't working properly. It took me several days to hunt down the proper drivers. I must have tried at least ten different versions (each with varying degrees of success) before settling on the Catalyst 10.4 -- which still isn't perfect but better than all the others I've tried.

My advice: If you manage to come across a good set of Catalyst drivers, stick with them.

Actually I wish i had'nt updated as you say they are not the best graphic drivers. Will wait for next update.

thanks for your help.
