"The powers that be" have come to the conclusion that the few dogs who have made Haad Rin their home for years, have been solely responsible for the latest Full Moon party low numbers.

Apparently it was not the exorbitant ripoff prices or economic world crisis, nor crowed and littered beaches, nor the common thieving or occasional stabbing that have been stopping ravers coming back to Haad Rin with their $. No, apparently it was those few quiet stray dogs sitting around Chicken Corner or 7-11 that were fully responsible for the downfall of this mighty money-making machine.

Well, that's all now fixed.

A few days ago, people that cannot be named took it upon themselves to lace rat poison with chicken, and gave it to the 60 or so always-hungry local dogs. Within a few hours their lifeless and bleeding bodies were being picked up and thrown into the back of a truck. There are many upset and sad locals to say the least, but for obvious reasons cannot say or do anything about it. Haad Rin is now eerily quiet with all those familiar friendly but sad faces gone.

Anyway, it's time to tell the world:

Come to Haad Rin, and party all night with the safe and cozy feeling that there won't be any sad-eyed animals spoiling your tropical paradise adventure. No, no more souls hoping for a scrap of that chicken roll, or maybe just a pat or two worth of warm human kindness...

Sadly this happen many times in our island, legally(?) made from the local government people. Sometimes, they just give a warning to the Thai owner of a dog to keep them home for a day or two, when they going to spread poisoned baits. :(

It also makes sense - from a sick, criminal point of view. The dogs befriend the tourists who feed them. This makes it more difficult to rob tourists if there is a dog hanging around. When I first arrived on Samui I used to walk up and down Bangrak after the bars closed looking for one that might be open because I was used to living in a place where they closed much later. Part of my routine was to stop into 7-11, buy some of those little hot dogs and share them with a couple strays hanging around. They were my best buddies the remainder of the night as I (usually) was unsuccessful in finding an open bar. If any Thai thug (and we know how these dogs and locals feel about each other) thought I was drunk enough to rob, my hired help would have made them think twice.

I am so sickened and heartbroken by this news. It happening too much on Phangan. I live in Ban Kai in jungle for last 4 years. 3 weeks ago my dogs were poisoned ( 2nd time, happeend Xmas 09 also) . Ignorant, heartless locals coming up into my land to spread poisoned chicken. For what reason i do not know. My dogs were loving, well-cared for , placid animal who stayed in my garden, wouldnt hurt a fly. If any of you have seen a dog dying from poison then u will know it is one of the most painful and agonising ways to die. I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy, (well maybe would be nice to see it happen to those who are doing the poisoning, then others might think twice !!! I cant believe 60 lives destyroyed because of FULL MOON Party. Will be happy to see day when they cancel the whole thing.

Hat Rin isnt ruined by dogs, its destroyed by the thousands of drunken disrepectful tourists, corrupt police and drug addicted locals who fight, break property and are incapable of picking up their bottles and garbage. Most of street pups are cared for by the PAC girls and actually arent much nuisance to anyone, just want bit of food and cuddle. Full Moon Party has ruined Phangan.

As for warning owners that poisoning is about to happen, this is a load of BS. Ye sometimes , (i think last time was about 2 years ago!!) they drive rouind in car blaring announcments (IN THAI) that most poeple dont have chance to hear properly. Anyways, stret dogs dont have owners alot of time so who is gona help them keep them in for a few dyas !!!???

Thailand is supposed to be mostly Buddhist country, this makes me laugh when i hear it. MOst hypocritical thing ever . Ive even heard of monks in wats posoing the dogs but freeing themselves of blame by saying they only put the poisoned food out, up to dogs if they eat it !!

Life is cheap, both for people and animals . It is about as far away from "Paradise" as you can get.

Prayers for all the loves that died, xx RIP

Yes this is unacceptable but what can you expect from uneducated people with no compassion. Even though we live here we don't have to accept there stupid outlook . Looking at those photo's it just makes you realise if you have dogs how lucky to have good friend's.

I seem to recall a thread about tainted dog food killing animals. This poisoning idea sounds interesting but is pure speculation. Did the OP see the people putting poison (which was identifiable as such) into chicken? Did any vet do any autopsies on the corpses and if so, has he released any data?

I'm not sure how much of this to buy into....

No problem if you don't believe, but a friend of mine personally brought one of the dogs, not yet dead, to the veterinary to treat the symptoms of poisoning.

Tracer Round, only your post is pure speculation...

You post has the naivity of someone that arrived on the island this morning. :D But i doubt this is the case.

What has the thread about the tainted dog food really have to do with the "deliberate" and more traditional Thai way?

Please explain, because i can think of more appropriate threads to deliberately stir up a hornets nest than this one. I also think you have lived here for a while and NO ONE that has lived here for a while is unaware of the way some locals deliberately poison dogs and their method of doing it.

Dogs are just great. They truly are man's best friend and want nothing but our company (and a snack here and there :) ) and in return they will show more loyalty than most people are capable of. Yet some cultures look at them as pests or a meal. Sick, sad and ignorant.

This party does not belong on Phangan, the original concept and early parties yes but what is going on now no. Just a bunch pissed kids getting completely totalled, to crap music and not giving a toss about destroying the place. It has nothing to do with anything but getting smashed in a different place, and on to the next!

I don't suppose we could hope for this to end some time soon...

is there not someone in government without vested interest...

Clara's mum...

Correction: Clara's mama & papa.

This family of three have been inseparable throughout the years, and they loved and were loved by the locals.

Missed dearly, but together they remain.

its a very sad story to read this, but there is a scope of education here and the need to implement a proper system, as although a few of these dogs are loving animals ( and i do have dogs ) there are also some vicious stray dogs that do bite people, carry rabbies, pee and poo on the beach where familes are ect ..... ( although i am truly against what these people are doing )

I have read somewhere, cannot recall, of an island with the same problem, or city, and there solution was a simple one

1) get all private dog owners to Tag there pets, and treat them like pets IE dont let them out to wander the streets !!

2) castrate all dogs, and chip them, so there isnt a big re growth population

3) Chip all the local dogs, so if a nusience dog is caught, you have tagged him/she .

Eventaully stray dogs will start vanish, similar to most westen areas where a stray dog is unknown

also , Thailand should create a similar orginization to the RSPCA , which in turn overseas all of this and also shelters the strays ect.... put has the power to prosecute owners who treat there pets badly ( i think the USA even has a police force that deals with this, but as Thai Police cannot even police humans, this would be way to over the top here )

Went for a stroll down Haad Rin beach this afternoon, first time after the poisonings that has so many locals there still upset.

Must say, very clean indeed! What with the new garbage baskets and special cigarette butt receptacles every 100m or so...

They also have a lovely new cement boardwalk on the northern side, complete with soi-type fluoro lampposts to complete that dog-less tropical island paradise theme.

So, how's the recent "improvements" going for you, Haad Rin?

With only a few days to go for the FMP, only a handful of tourists could be seen on the beach.

...

Anyone who's ever seen a dog mistreated by an "owner", and seen it come back time and time again to that person with the characteristic total devotion dogs have, would understand this from the heart:

"I LOOK AT THE SKY, AND SMILE WITH ALL DOGS,

INNOCENTS AND HAPPY SOULS"

Thank you, Shaolin.

Heard today from a reliable local source that powers that be are planning another "cleanup" at Haad Rin within the next few days. Apparently there is still not enough $ coming in, even after the last mass poisoning took out most of the local dog population and made Haad Rin a clean and inviting place for tourists.

Heads up - if you are living anywhere in Haad Rin, please ask neighbours to keep their locals dogs safe inside at nights - at least until the latest threat of dog poisoning blows over.

Why don't you send something to some of the National papers? A big thing going on at the moment about the rescued dogs HERE, seems like an opportune moment to bring this topic to light .
