We are moving to BKK next month and do not reallt want to carry my imac quad core over there.

I see that there is a mac pro for sale on the classified section but never used one in the ad it says its a 6 core processor so i guess it will be faster than my quad imac. (Kids play some really demanding games under bootcamp)

Also he has a DELL monitor for it has anyone used the DELL u3011 monitor is it good to use with the mac pro?

I am guessing it will be sold by the time we get there but seems like a decent enough deal.

Not all programs take advantage of extra cores; so best compare the speed of your iMac against the Mac Pro.

I have a 2008 8 core 2.8 Mac Pro with an upgraded graphics card and it runs any game I throw at it at a healthy speed. The great thing about the Pro compared to the iMac is that you can update it. As well as the upgraded graphics card, I also have four hard drives plus an SSD boot drive running inside. So you can have back-up drives in the machine, plus a separate drive for Boot Camp and Windows.

The Dell U3011 has good reviews and is an ips panel (which means the screen will look good from any angle). I have the Apple Cinema Display which is also good, plus a secondary Samsung display which I use for displaying menus when processing photos. To use an Apple Cinema Display you will need a graphics card that supports the Apple connector.

The Mac Pro is a lovely machine. Beautifully built, whisper quiet and room to grow.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a bit of overkill for what I need for the home machine and for the kids. But does sound like an awesome machine.

I spoke to the seller today and he still has it and is offering a good deal on it. So if anyone needs a powerful mac then give the guy a call.

He said he would let me have the DELL U3011 and the Mac Pro for 115,000THB which seems a really good deal considering he wanted 130,000THB before.

Here is the guys ad anyway: Mac Pro And Dell Monitor Classified

The setup is missing an SSD. I am betting my 2 year old MacBook Pro is faster than that Mac Pro because I have a SSD and that beast doesn't. Then again, not hard to add. It's just weird to have such a high end system without boot / app SSD.

Actually with that many HD bays I'd get 2 120GB SSDs in a Raid 0, that would make it fly.

If I had room I might be tempted... ;)

I don't think so dude. Read/Write performance would be faster of course but that is all. CPU/Graphics card etc. would leave it for dust from what i have read. Look at handbrake encode on the 3.33GHZ 6 core it's impressive!

SSD can be added as you desire easily looking at the internals. Still tempted by this offer.......hmm

A machine with SSD will feel faster than one without - it makes a huge difference. Not for special CPU crunching tasks like Handbrake encoding, but for day to day use. So this Mac Pro definitely needs one or better yet 2 SSDs, HD presents a bottleneck, even more so if the system is as fast as that one.

Agree SSD makes a huge difference. But put a SSD in that mac pro with that processor and that graphics card. I would bet $1000 that it would a "Little bit" faster than your 2 year old macbook pro.

From what I read the beauty of the Mac Pro is the expandability, Xeon processors and its supposed to be whisper quiet. Mac Pro's do not ship with SSD as standard.

You don't even need to take up an HD slot with an SSD; just stick it in the spare DVD drive bay, plenty of space!

I guess technically you could do away with the optical drive, put 2 SSD drives in a RAID 0 configuration and then still have space for 4 3TB Hard Drives in RAID 0 for 12TB storage :) That would be awesome.

Agree with all the above. I have had Mac Pro's for years. I think they are the best built and obviously the fastest Mac's available.

I have one almost identical to the one for sale except I use 2 SSD's in the optical bay RAID0 and 4 2TB HD's in RAID0.

SSD is so easy to add to a MAC PRO as are Hard drives and Graphics cards etc. Also as stated above it is almost silent and run's so cool with multiple fans throughout the case.

The DELL U3011 is probably the best 30" monitor out there also highly recommended. Overall anyone thinking of purchasing that one in the classifieds can rest assured it's an awesome machine and if that deal price mentioned above is correct you should buy it from him today! Bargain.

Well we arrived in Bangkok but decided to pass on the MAC PRO and stick with the IMAC range and bought 2 21.5" for the home.

Out of interest I spoke to the seller yesterday of the MAC PRO in the classified section as he is going to setup Time Capsule and some airport express and apple tv for me next week. Nice guy and pretty knowledgable on MAC.

He said he has to sell the MAC PRO this week as he is moving condo and is going to let it go for 68,000THB and to ask anyone i know if they want it. Don't know too many people in BKK so thoguht i would update you guys.

IF u need a MAC PRO this week I suggest you buy his it is an incredible deal now at a giveaway price. Its like less than half the new price at that price.
