Is there a way to access the US store with a Thai linked credit card account, rather than use the Thai app store which is much more limited than the US one is? Seems a bit crazy the way its set up but perhaps due to licensing law I presume.

it's a law issue ...

easiest way is to get a Prepaid credit-card, register another account and log in with it as you go ..
