Baiporn Restaurant

Just backfrom a quick wander around the old city and I came across this little restaurant down Soi1, Sriphum, which appeared to have a lot of vegetarian food, some meat dishes and also an Italian style menu. There were a couple of people sitting in there on their net books and the prices looked reasonable.

I satdown and was greeted by a Thai guy, sweaty, wearing short tight shorts and atank top. I sat down and was given a glass of water and a menu then he departedinto the kitchen, A few moments later the same sweaty Thai guy emerged from thekitchen, walked over to one of the guys working on the net book, kissed him onthe head and made what can only be described as a gesture with his bum, towardsthe guys face and they both giggled, girly like.

He thencame over to me and asked me for my order.

OK, Iseem to have wandered into an overtly gay place, but that's not a problem. Iordered green curry with brown rice, a salad and a mixed fruit shake. The guywas friendly enough. After I finished ordering he said "I hope you don'tmind waiting a bit as I have to do everything myself tonight". Hmm, Iwondered right then, if he was going to shower first and maybe put on something appropriate for cooking, but nopeI could see him working way in the kitchen. I must say that I did have thoughts about shouting in "I'm going cancel the order"but I didn't.

He cameout after a while with the fruit shake and salad with an oil/vinaigrettedressing, then went over to the same guy again and repeated what happenedearlier...obviously this is a joke between them both and the guy sitting downput his hand around his waist and rubbed his head on the guys stomach and this brought extra giggles. Now, I'm really not bothered about this behavior, but with sweat dripping from him, skimpy clothes and being grabbed, I was feeling a bit uncomfortable at him preparing my food......but the salad and fruit shakewere good! As he passed he asked if everything was OK, which it was at the time(food wise), though I knew it really couldn't have been prepared hygienically. OK, I've eaten at worse places, I'll stick it out, have the curry, pay the bill, but I won't come back - it's certainly not my kind of place, but I can see how it might appeal to some people.

The curry came with brown rice and it looked good....but that's where it ended. With my first mouthful I could taste gritty curry powder and it was just curry powder, mixed with water and a bit of coconut whatever, a few bits of potato and a sprinkling of nuts – it had no resemblance to penang curry taste wise. I reallycouldn't eat it and if I am to be honest, also the thought of this being prepared by a sweaty guy in short shorts, tank top who wandered in and out touching another guy, really didn't add anything to the taste (for me).

So for me it lost out on two points, the food overall wasn't good (the main dish was awful) and the unhygienic dress/manner of the guy who seemed to be the owner. I'm not putting it down, just telling it as it was. I very rarely writea thread about any restaurant, but just felt I needed to say something about my experience here.

Please feel free to give it a go and draw your own conclusion - it's most definitely not for me, but I'm sure there are many that will find the experience enjoyable.

Four times you talk about this sweaty guy in tight shorts after running back from the restaurant to post about him. :whistling:

Yeah...and? unsure.gif

I wish I could run back.

I bet you do :D

Nice one - of course I meant run home. wink.gif

I don't like overtly gay people handling my food either. But no issue with gays as long as they mind their own business. Live and let live. :wai:

Gay or hetero, actually makes no difference in this scenario.

They are ofen very good cooks with good taste in food. I have no problem with eating at a gay restaurant unless they are having sex on the table in front of me. :D

How about eating at a straight restaurant.....same scenario? rolleyes.gif

Sorry I really don't know if I am right but the line

"but with sweat dripping from him"

jumped out at me.

Can't say as I have ever seen a Thai sweat much less have it dripping from him. Obviously he had not been cooking much with no clientele. Could he have just doused himself with water?

Thanks uptheos for telling us about this dump.

Sounds gross and I will definitely avoid that place if I'm in the area.

This reminds me of an experience my girlfriend and I had last year. We were in Hang Dong market, felt hungry and decided to have some noodles at one of the little eating places in there.

Our meal was served, which wasn't bad. I was watching the big fat middle aged lady cook, who was in front of me, stirring up a load of whatever it was in a large pot being heated on a gas ring. Then she suddenly lowered her face almost into the pot and sneezed into it. She never even put her hand over her mouth.

It was like one of the worst things I've even seen, I came over physically sick. The girlfriend and me stopped eating, paid the bill and we got out of there double quick.. Never returned since. I'm still having nightmares about it.

These events do leave a sour taste in our mouths, literally, in our cases.

Just to say; our uptheos is no troll, he is one of the nice guys of Thai visa, so shutup pa ya faces.

There is a term in cooking called to sweat off which can mean To cook an ingredient covered over low heat to make it give up its juices.

But I don't think it applies to Body fluids or as to the reason why he may have been sweating

But then after kissing his friend on the head and making a gesture with his bottom towards him who knows.

Just be careful and stay away from the Mayo :o

No offense to gay people intended.
