You want what

Peace and quiet

take a way the traffic

Take away the tuktuks

Take away the Indians on the footpaths

Take away the screaming Thai

yes you'll find peace and quiet

But then why go

and atmsophere, why do you think most of the traffic police wera face wears masks

atmosphere you can cut it with a knife

But we all love it

Head north my friend Head North

Way up North land of the buffalo

Find a nice rice farm and there you will find Peace and quiet and clean atmosphere

Yeah Diana, if yo uwant peace and quiet you must go up country. Get away from the maddening crowds up into the mountains, or Isaan. Pimai is a great place as mentioned before. Nice and quiet but really cool and friendly. Get off the beaten tourist track and you will find lots of quiet places. If you look at aguide book and it says very little about a place ....then go there.....because there will be few tourists.

In the mountains of Northen Thailand you will find small guesthouses or homestays.....not mentioning any place names :o but just go and look for yourself. You will find what you want.

The most peaceful and beautiful spot I've found in the kingdom is ... wait a minute, if I tell you then the population will increase by one.

If you've never lived in Thailand before, you will probably find it hard to adjust to small town life right off the bat. Start with a larger city for a year or two, while taking time to get to know all the regions of Thailand. Eventually you'll find a spot you like. Either that or you'll decide you don't like being here after all.

Take a trip around the north and north east. If Chiang Mai doesn't suit then my suggestion would be KhonKaen, the 4th largest city in Thailand but doesn't have that big city pace. There is a modern airport with 4 flights a day, buses and trains also provide regular service.

There are modern shopping centres which sell a wide varity of goods.

Laos is not far for visa runs when required

It is not a heavily touisted area and a knowledge of Thai would be handy.

For more info use this link KhonKaen there is a forum to post any questions about the region attached.

Dear Diana,

I really think you need more than 2 weeks to see if you love it. Try to stay for 6 months in one place. Do some teaching or whatever and then you will have a beter idea. Chiang Mai is a nice place good climate. Up country is so much more relaxed tha Bangkok and Chiang Mai is a place where you will find other expats, loads of western fixes if you need them, while at the same time you could live outside that expat sphere if you so wanted. Go for it and enjoy, Thailand is a very liveable place.

I think there is an American Consulate in Chiang Mai. Maybe you could write to them asking for information you need. Also, this forum is a good place to ask for contacts up in Chiang Mai. I dont know that there is an expat club or anything like that. You could try going to the 'Riverside restuarant and bar area' it is just alongside the river in Chiang mai - everyone knows it. yopu might meet some locals there, but I would say that if you were a local expat you may not frequent a place like that as it is mostly tourists and local Thai's and also a mixed crowd as far as ages go. Someone who lives in chaing Mai could best answer you. Good luck.
