Imac Time Machine Password

Featured Replies

I have an iMac with the latest software. I have an external HD with time machine doing my backups

I am worried if someone ever steals my backup hard drive that I don't have a password on it to protect the info if it is ever disconnected from the computer. My computer has a password so that should be okay if it fell into someones hands but I assume the backup will have all my info available to anyone that has it

any way to password protect it?

Well, there are some ways to do that. The easyest way is to use the network version of timemachine, as ists creating a single bundle which can be easy encrypted.

But generaly its not advisable at all to do that, as this generates a failure of backups resulting of crc errors or simple fs or hardware issues leading to total loss of encrypted filesystems.

On s realtime backup okay (if you store a non encrypted backup of the backup some place else)

not sure I understand. It doesnt look like I want the network way. I am just worried if someone should steal my Backup HD that they will get my info. I would like to give it a password if someone trys to open it other than from my computer, I think you are saying I cant do that. I have many password protected files on my computer, if they go to the backup do they remain password protected in the HD?

thanks
