I currently have a non imm B visa which will be a year in November, I'm having to go back to the UK next month so was hoping to get a non imm "o' visa while I was there which would see me through for another 15 months.

What I would like to know is whether it is possible to get a non imm "o" visa while still having a non imm "B" that has not yet expired?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is possible. The new visa wil cancel your old one.

But realize that the rules for a non-o are now stricter. Based on visiting friends you will not be getting one anymore. For being married to a Thai or retirement it is no problem.
