Be careful, in my area cutting down certain trees can find you in jail. check to see if you need a permit from the forestry department first. They don't enforce much in the way of laws out this way, but the forestry and border soldiers are an exception. Teak or mahogany is a no no without a permit. Jim

Thanks guys, The last time g/f mother got 7 or 8 old people from the village

to cut with hachets. It took about 3 days but it grew back in no time.

I was hoping to get a machine or tractor and take up the roots. also cut larger trees down

and take up roots, maybe plough and grow something.

Dont clean it until you are ready to build as it will grow back fast and then you will be constantly fighting it as I have learned the hard way lol.

Top advise. We cleared 34 rai ready for planting rubber near Nong Khai, the seedlings were not good enough to plant so now we will have to wait until next year, and clear again.

It cost us 1,600 baht a rai as it was covered in eucalyptus, clearing grass and weeds would have been 300 baht.

Another very important thing is to be specific what they will do with the trees, will they remove the stumps or just cut the trees at ground level ? And be firm on the price agreed too many times thais will say x amount without really thinking or looking at the job then come back crying for more many from the rich falang, I say f*^k em the price agreed is the price agreed every time.

I've cleared approx. 60 Rai of land of various sizes northeast of Udon Thani.

For a 6 rai piece I would hire out one of the local Ford tractors, they'll knock down a very big tree, pile up the debris and burn it. Any tree that is larger we get a local guy with a chainsaw to cut them down and he also turns the log into some very useable lumber. I've had all the wooden doors in the house handbuilt, teak under the eaves of the house, desk for my computer is under construction right now. Around our area you can cut trees (in moderation) and use the lumber yourself but you cannot sell it. We've been visited by the local officials regarding the lumber but the wife explains its our trees cut for our own purposes. Haven't had any other trouble. But do have the wife/GF find out about your area.

After you've cleared the trees, if there are not too many stumps I hire people to hand dig down around the roots and cut the roots and remove the stump. Also refill the hole they made. The chainsaw guy makes me nice stools from the stumps for our Thai kitchen.

For weed control untill you're ready to use the land just get your guy that knocked down the trees to plow it every couple of months or you can look around your area and find someone with a rototiller attachment for there Kubota tractor. I have one of my own and they do a very nice job of chewing up the weeds and any small roots that are left over.
