Don't know about the duty but you can buy Kindles from www.read.in.th - they're about 7000-odd baht (though I can't vouch for the company.)

I had a friend bring my Kindle from the US. I showed it to a friend of mine here and he HAD to have one immediately. I ordered it for him from this company and was amazed that it was delivered within two days. I was impressed with their communication and service but wasn't impressed with the price. He paid about 7,800 baht, almost double the US price.

I was one of those who said "never" to electronic books. But I heard so many raves about the Kindle that I finally bought one and love it. Also, there are tons of free books out there that you can download for it. I did not pay duty on mine. If you want to know how, PM me with your phone number and I will call you and tell you.
