KUCHING, MALAYSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Nine Indonesians were killed on early Thursday morning when their car collided head-on with a truck in eastern Malaysia, police said. Two others were injured.

The accident happened at around 3.30 a.m. local time on a road between the cities of Sri Aman and Sarikei when a car carrying the Indonesians collided head-on with a truck which was transporting fruits and vegetables.

It took rescue workers nearly an hour to reach the remote scene, but most of the victims were believed to have been killed on impact. Nine Indonesians, aged between 21 and 40, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A tenth Indonesian inside the car was transported to a hospital in Sri Aman, about two hours by road, where the 40-year-old remains in a critical condition. The driver of the truck, who is 45 years old, suffered injuries to his leg while his passenger was not injured.

The Toyota Rush has a seating capacity of seven, but it was not immediately known if overcrowding caused the accident. Officials said poor visibility in the area may also have contributed to the cause of crash.
