A friend of mine would like to purchase a semi-pro second-hand. Nothing too new, a few years old is fine.

Fair point. Definitely digital, brand -prefer Canon, Nikkon, Sony or Olympus. Body or with standard lens would be fine.

Something that came out a few years ago, example Sony a-350, which has been upgraded a couple of times would be fine.
