I will be getting married in Ban Pong in a few months and will need a place for farang relatives and friends to stay. I thought of them staying in bkk, but the transpotation to Ban Pong would be difficult. Any suggestions would be appreciated, also is there anything to do in Ban Pong, as the future wife has property there and I am strongly considering building a house there and retiring.

Thanks

There's probably many villages in Thailand with that name. Which province is your 'Ban Pong' in?

And what is the nearest sizeable town to Ban Pong?

I guess you mean the Banpong about 20km west of Nakom Pathom. My g/f is from there so I've been there a couple of dozen times.

No idea about hotels and the like but as you're so near Nakon Pathom findign a place to stay in the vicinity isnt hard.

It's quite anice littletown, "City of nice people" is the offical town motto and that's about as interrsting as it gets. Another claim to fame is that a well known Thai porn star from the 80s was from Banpong - can still see her photos in some barbers shops.

There's a very good night market with loads of food, nice small restaurants by the river and you can get the Bangkok Post or Nation at 7am in the morning from the papershop near the railway station, just past the concrete elephant family.

Stuff to do . . . read the paper, eat and use the internet is all I've found to do. Also,it's nice to run by the klongs to the west of the town centre early in the morning - lots of friendly people out doing their morning exercise.

There are quite a few farang teachers living there due to the large catholic school in the town centre but apart from a couple of 7-11s, no well known stores at all.

But if you want a Golden Retriever, one of Thailand's top breeders, a local vet, lives nearby as does the mother of the guy who owns Probike - the best mountain bike shop in Bkk, her small bike shop had a 60,000 baht Klein for sale last time I walked past - bit of a shock as the majority of the stock was under 5,000 baht.

The Ban Pong i am speaking of is in Ratchaburi Province. I have only been there once. And know nothing about the area i'm afraid.

There are nice hotels in nakhom pathom and a taxi service too, the hotels can be found on the internet or if you are centred in banpong you might try kanchanaburi or Ratchaburi too. I am there this month so if I have any further info will post it.

Hi Tracman, there are quite a few hotels in Ban Pong. The one I would recommend is on the Kanchanaburi road just out of the town, next to the river. I can't remember the name, but I'll check it out next time I'm in Ban Pong. Ban Pong has the usual Thai style nightlife and many good eating places. There is a ten pin bowling alley and many excellent golf courses nearby. There is also good fishing in the area. It depends on what your taste in entertainment is. There are not many "farang" in Ban Pong, most are living in the Kanchanaburi area. I retired here four years ago and built a house. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I would like to thank everyone for the information. I am happy to hear that there are accomodations in Ban Pong, and a few farangs as well. I have heard that the people are very friendly there, perhaps as it is not a tourist area-i imagine. Do you folks like it there? And thanks Derek-C if you stop by the hotel i would appreciate it.

Hi Tracman, I dropped into the hotel today. It's the Thainum Riverside Hotel, 19/50 M4 Sangchooto Rd Ban Pong. Tel 032 211947-8 Fax 032 221154.

They do a standard room with aircon, TV, bathroom and include 2 American Breakfast for 850 baht. They would discount this to 750 baht. They also have a suit for 1200 baht which also includes 2 breakfast. They are very friendly their and a lot of local Thais and busnesses hold functions there. It's about 1k from the centre of Ban Pong just off the main Kanchanaburi road about 200 metres on the left after the traffic lights, set on the River. Hope everything goes well for you.

The Thainum Riverside Hotel is probably the best place to stay if you wish to stay with Ban Pong. I have stayed there serveral times as my wife's relatives live a short distance from there. The last time I stay was in April and the rates were 800, 900, 1300 and 2000 baht for the various sized rooms. All rates included breakfast for two. I have stayed in both the 900 and 1300 baht rooms and have look at there other sized rooms as well and felt those two were best for the comfort and money. 800 baht rooms a bit to small and 2000 baht rooms were nice if you want what I would call a jr. suite. All reasonable when you consider that it works out to about $19 US to $46 US.

There are several very nice places to eat along the river, check with the front desk for transportation, sometimes they will offer to help. A number of the resturants offer some farang dishes although they would be missing out on some very good Thai food.

I'm sure you already have a place set for your marriage but if you need a resturant to accomodate your guests let me know an I will have my wife get the name of an excellent place with wonderful food and very nice atmosphere. I think the name was Chochiyapuk (best I can do with phonetic spelling) and will get you the directions if interested. I had about 30 family and friends join us there in April, staff very accomodating and we gave them a two day notice with number of guests and all the dishes we wanted prepared.

My wife was wondering where in Ban Pong is your future wife's property, she was wondering if it was nearby her house.

If you need any additional info regarding eating places in the area or transportation to and from Ban Pong to BKK, etc please post or email directly.

I have to pay tribute to this network - Thaivisa. We (My wife, elder son, baby son Kane & Mr La Rue himself) are going to visit the family in Tha Maka in June/July. We want a location which enables us to visit the family, spend time in Hua Hin, and go to BKK frequently. Older sister spoke about Thai Nam (it turns out to be Thai Num) hotel) I have spent about an hour on google trying to find ANY info about such an hotel in Ban Pong, without luck. I search on Thai VIsa - and I find basically what I need.

If there are any updates about rates I appreciate it - But as it is we will probably stay there anyway. I link to a hotel web page would be nice, we are looking for a swiming pool. Ban Pong rekindles old memories, Wifey rented her wedding dress there. Trying it on, I was left breathless with this woman in front of me going through on her promise to mary. The family where in a bit of a panic when I refused to rent a Male THai wedding suit - they did not know that I had the tuxedo in the suitcase. Great was the relief, when I appeared in the morning as smug as a casino shark - good times, good times.
