I emailed an insurance broker about getting fully comprehensive insurance for a Honda PCX in Samui. He came back with two suggestions.

Although I will have to sit down and discuss further with him when I arrive, I thought that I might ask whether any of you guys have these policies, and if they are any good.

The two he came back with are as follows:

AXA fully comprehensive, theft, fire, own damage, third party bodily injury 250,000 per person, only driver covered.

ThaiSri, which also covers third party 1,000,000THB and the driver plus passenger (1) for 100,000 in case of injury.

Whilst I know AXA, I have never heard of Thai Sri, and although I found their website, I couldn't find any reviews of their services.

I do realise that further medical insurance is a good idea to cover hospital costs, and I have also read that it is a good idea to get a bail bond provision. Any other suggestions on what I might need to cover myself adequately?

I've purchased Motorbike insurance through an excellent insurance Broker for two small Yamaha bikes for many years with ThaiSri. This is a huge company in that market segment, a "cooperative partner of The Zurich Financial Services Group". I've been very fortunate and not made any claims, but if this company was "weak" my broker would steer me to a different firm. The policy is sent in both English and Thai. For 1155 baht I am covered for TEN million baht per accident, 300,000 baht per person, 200,000 baht bail bond, etc.. No theft coverage. We also have the mandatory policy through ThaiSri so in the event of a claim we avoid two different companies disagreeing on the payment or responsibility. The mandatory part is 323 baht per year on a 115 cc Yamaha. The cover sheet showing all the levels of coverage is in Thai and English of both policies.

This sounds pretty good.

How did you manage to get the mandatory insurance through the same company? Was it just coincidence?

Does the dealer not just supply you with mandatory insurance when you buy the bike? or can you choose where, or which company you get it from?

Sorry for my ignorance.

Sounds like it is only Third Party cover. Really for Thailand, Third Party, Fire and Theft is the min. due to the amount of bikes stolen. But also there is 1st Class available - comprehensive.

If in doubt use a good Broker - try HERE

I had to establish in no uncertain terms we did NOT want to buy any sort of insurance at the local Yamaha dealership. My insurance broker in Phuket Eric Dohlon explained to me why it was not prudent to have two different companies. Frankly the theft in our small town was not a consideration, the liability and medical coverage for both the driver, passengers and other parties was the major consideration. If that Yamaha was parked in Pattaya or Phuket I might look at a different policy. ThaiSri has brokers all over Thailand, but for me it works best dealing with a bi-lingual dual citizen licensed insurance broker born in Thailand, but native English speaker who shares my concerns as a Farang. Nothing is "lost in translation" and no "try to guess what he means" when dealing with Eric Dohlon.

After filling in the quote form linked above, and getting no reply, I have tried emailing AA twice asking if they got the form. Still no reply.

I am flying out to Samui next week, and planning to buy a PCX.

Can anyone recommend an insurance broker in Samui? I have contacted one, but just want to compare a couple to see what they can come up with regarding "First Class", and compulsory insurance.
