Using Mobile In India For Wi-Fi

Featured Replies

I will be visiting India for five days and have borrowed my daughter's Galaxy Mini as I would like to be able to visit Web sites from time to time. If I connect using WiFi (say, in a hotel or coffee shop) will I incur charges for using the mobile on a per minute basis? Does just turning the phone on incur a charge as it roams? I just don't want to get back and find a bill for hundreds of dollars for using the phone like that overseas.

Follow-up question: Is there a cheap SIM can buy in India to avoid any problems with high rates for use outside Thailand?

Thanks much in advance for anyone providing any answers to the above.

Connecting to WiFi will not incur any charge as you won't be using the mobile network connection provided by your operator but the wi-fi connection provided by whatever cafe, hotel or public place you're connecting to.

To be sure your phone won't try to connect to mobile data network while abroad, go in "settings" (by pressing "menu" from the home screen) then Wireless&Networks>Mobile Networks and make sure "data roaming" is unchecked.

Airtel, Aircel or Vodafone will charge you around 50 Rupees for a sim card (you will need a photo and copy of your passport), and calls are very cheap.

Thank you both for your very helpful replies!
