Travel Insurance

Featured Replies

My daughter is going on a working holiday to the UK in October for about nine months. I'm looking for advice about travel insurance. Has anyone had experience wth a reliable company? What sort of coverage doeas she neeed? How much should we expect to pay?

A lot depends on her current situation.

Does she currently have health insurance that will cover her when out of country of residence?

Travel insurance can be obtained that covers medical and personal property.

Be aware that most travel insurance policies only cover short trips out of home country not extended trips for 9 months. I've used BUPA Thailand in the past for travel medical insurance and the max time out of country was 90 days on a trip.

Make sure any policy you obtain has medical repatriation back to home country in case of serious medical problems.

Not cheap. Your choices from UK companies are very few as most will only cover UK residents. A company that does cover your situation and are highly rated is world nomads and as you can see, not cheap. By way of comparison the same cover for a UK resident travelling on the same trip (excluding US) would cost about half the price. Btw. I've assumed your daughter is a Thai resident for purposes of quote.

this is key.

look for no limits on hospital expenses, repatriation/evacuation. Also dont be fooled by offers of 5 million dollar cover with strict limits on all the small stuff, you could never spend 5 million. look for a reasonable amount of cover with no limits or exceptions.

Also be sure she is covered everywhere she wants to go.

policies can be up to one year multi trip.
