Defaults For Opening Files

Featured Replies

I have an iMac. I used to have windows. I have 3 different programs to show videos but i want the default to be VLC which seems to work best. I want all the videos to open with VLC when I click on them unless I click open with and want something else. In windows there is a file that shows everything and what you want the opening default to be. I cannot find this option on the mac. It has it for DVD's and CD's in system properties, but not for files I have on the computer or ones I download. Is there a way to tell my computer to open all movies and videos with VLC first, as a default? I have clicked on every option I could find and cant find anything

thanks

This isn't the simple one click solution that you are looking for, but it works for me.

I have an alias of VLC on my desktop and when I want to open a video, I drag the video icon to the VLC alias icon.

Yes there is. Single click on the movie file you want to view. Then press command and i together. That will open an information window. In that window click the "Open with" tab and select VLC. Then click change all. Now when you double click a movie it will automatically open in VLC. By the way, have you tried MPlayerX? I prefer it to VLC. It's free and available in the App Store.

You're welcome! I have both and I had a video that wouldn't play on VLC, but it worked fine on MPlayerX.

This information is useful for things other than video as well. I work in Photoshop all the time and I hate it when files like a screen shot (png) open with "Preview". I used that method to permanently open all PNG files directly in Photoshop, more or less eliminating Preview as a viewer.
