I'm an expat living in Thailand and have recently heard that you can get TV channels from the UK via newuktv.com.

You pay (35 USD per month), download and install some software, login and hey presto - maybe...

Has anyone got any experience of this ?? The website is quite basic but it's advertised on Pattaya People radio which sort of implies it might actually work - but then again who knows !!

Hi, I've no experience of that particular website - it looks good and convenient but there are other free ways as all UK TV channels are available online anyway in the same mannar as offered by newuktv.com. Lots of expats used myiplayer.com, and VPN software Expat shield lets you watch iplayer, C4, 5 and ITV online by disguising your computers IP address and giving it a UK one. You see, BBC iplayer now has the iplayer Desktop which lets you do all the newuktv features for free ie download programs, auto-remind etc. If you're paying for anything, I'd suggest buying the full Expat shield as the service is great, the free version is just so annoying with all the 'technews' popups and the like.

I am actually using it and have been for about 6 months.

I do not want to post any specific comments on this forum but will accept some PM's

Suffice to say you need a reliable preferably dedicated ADSL internet download connection of at least 8Mbps and a ping of less than 40Mms that is consistent and does not suffer any major packet loss. You can test all these aspects with Speed test & Ping test that I understand TV make available or you can google for them.

Caveat Emptor!!!

40ms Ping from Thailand to UK!!!!!!

The only way to get that is use one of the fixed speed tests that the Thai ISP's cache to fool customers. The problem is not just poor international connections to Europe but also distance. To get a ping of 40ms you need to go faster than light, which is impossible. (At least it was till last week, but that's the subject for another thread!)

To give some helpful advice I would try UnblockUS.com. The service is very easy to use. You don't need a VPN (Just change your DNS server to theirs) and they give a few days free trial so you can really try it out. It worked for me with Hulu in America and BBC in UK but could not get it to work on Sky, whereas my VPN does.

Have a look at this thread free trial of the software, works well on 2Mbs and acceptable if you have a solid 1Mbs link.

When I tested UnblockUs I had no problems so I subscribed (5 USD per month) After about a week I lost BBC. There was someone else in Thailand with the same problem but UnblockUs couldn't resolve the problem. They were great, they refunded my $5 immediately. I am now using UmblockVPN, same subscription rate, without any problems.
