Suan Dusit Poll: Political conflict makes flood operation difficult

BANGKOK, 23 October 2011 (NNT) – The majority of Bangkok-dwellers believe that a political conflict has made the ongoing flood crisis more difficult to handle, according to a recent poll by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University.

Almost 77 percent of the respondents have a feeling that the Pheu Thai Party core members and the Bangkok governor only give their priority to their own political territories, resulting in the lack of systematic solutions. As much as 67 percent believe that the political intervention will eventually put the popularity of the politicians involved in jeopardy. About 70 percent blame the political conflict for making the matter worse.

In the view of the respondents, the agencies undertaking the royal projects are the most trustworthy with 31.04 percent, followed by academics with 30.11 percent.

What makes coping with the deluge even more difficult is the ineptitude - along with the insanely conflicting reporting - that has been displayed by several government ministers over the past couple of weeks, although government agencies like the Irrigation Department and the Meteorological Department as well as numerous academics already had warned as far back as June/July that a crisis was looming due to the unusually heavy monsoon. But instead of acting quickly and devising precautionary measures ('better be safe than sorry'), the government was still pre-occupied with clamping down on illegal gmabling dens, lobbying foreign governments to issue visas to a certain fugitive, finding ways to bringing him back by any means, and finding a 'suitable' candidate to replace the chief of police.

We haven't heard a single word from Chalerm Yubamrung in recent weeks, although he usually is the loudest bayer of them all. He is probably still busy with raiding gambling dens and busting drug dealers - although he might have to leave his Jaguar at home and instead travel by flatbottom boat.

We also haven't heard anything from the 'gray eminence' in Dubai, mostly because - lo and behold! - he has recently declared for the umpteenth time (the 486th time, if I've counted it right) that he is going to finally, finally, finally going to give up his political ambitions. Now? He's giving it up NOW? NOW, when his advice could actually have some merit? Oh, well...

The only thing we DID hear was the soar voice of Agitator No. 1, Jatuporn Promphan, who, as usual, was lightning-fast to declare (in all earnestnesss and without any sarcastic undertones) that the entire flooding mess was actually the work of the Yellowshirts and the Democrats and the Army, who had all conspired to bring about the deluge and hinder mitigation efforts with the sole aim of ousting the current government. Unfortunately, Thanyarat Psychiatric Hospital is reportedly underwater, otherwise he could be delegated a nice, comfy, padded cell there.

And by the way: My area is still bone dry. That's why I am not going to ramble on.

Bangkok residents worried by political conflict news during flood: Poll

BANGKOK, Oct 23 – Nearly 84 per cent of Bangkok residents were worried about news related to political conflicts in solving flooding, according to a poll released on Sunday.

Assumption University's ABAC Poll conducted an opinion poll among 1,305 persons living in the capital between Oct 15-22 on the topic of lessons they learned from the country’s flood crisis.

About 81 per cent of respondents said that they wanted to see good cooperation between the Pheu Thai Party’s core leaders and Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra from the Democrat Party in tackling the severe flooding.

As Thailand faces the country’s worst inundation in decades, 66.3 per cent of the respondents said that they learned more about how to brace for and handle the flood crisis, adding that the crisis brought unity in the nation and gave them lessons on impact of natural destruction.

Regarding spending during the floods, 67.2 per cent of respondents said that they had spent more on stockpiling food, drinking water and necessities.

Meanwhile, about 56 per cent said that the spending will be much higher after the flood as they have to repair homes, cars and electric appliances and pay for higher commodity prices as well as possible medical treatment from flood-related illnesses.

In addition, 30.4 per cent of respondents said that their spending during the post-flood period will be normal while 13.7 per cent said that they will spend less. (MCOT online news)

Perhaps ask the Thai taxpayers about that. There are many who rather upset that their tax money and relief efforts are being used to benefit a certain politician during a time of national crisis. Instead of wasting time and effort to make himself look better, maybe he should concentrate on doing something useful besides lying and trying to take credit from the taxpayers.

It is a simple matter of priorities......first the people in need.....I don't really care who tries to benefit alongside.....I really don't....if the packaging meant that the parcels did not arrive that would be serious......if it means they arrive quicker.......that would be a bonus......people first for me.....Thaksin is not the current problem, disease, clean water,food supplies and accomodation are the problem, and maybe for some time........and if Thaksin, the government, taxpayers, people all over the world, donate to relieve the suffering of the displaced in Thailand, they have my respect and appreciation.........

Regardless of what is on the bloody packaging!!
