At last Apple has ahnowledged the problem ;

Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 to its registered iOS developers. According to the release notes, the new beta—listed as build 9A402—“fixes bugs affecting battery life, adds multitasking gestures for original iPad, resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud, improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation,” and “contains security improvements.” Notably, the update also “introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations,” seemingly addressing an issue recently brought to light by Instapaper developer Marco Arment. An Apple spokesperson confirmed that some iOS 5 users were experiencing battery life issues early today, telling The Loop, “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices[.] We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” iOS 5.0.1 beta for the iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch is available now as a download from the iOS Dev Center.

Anyone having home button problems try this before replacing button.

Re: Iphone 4 Home button not working after upgrade to OS 4.3.1

My theory is that it has something to do with multi-tasking/background processes that interfere with button signal.  Here is something you can try that works for me:

1) turn off mail push notification (Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>Fetch New Data)

2) turn off Spotlight Search (Settings>General>Spotlight Search)

3) clean out background app task.  Double click the home button--if you can--then press & hold the icon until an X appear and start pressing on the X untill all is removed.

4) power down

5.0.1 is out but iPhone 4S users are still having battery issues. Apple issued another release saying they're investigating those.

Not too surprised with the phone doing more and more - and making more and more background network connections - battery life is hard to keep under control.

If you want Nokia level battery life - e.g. fantastic - turn off Notifications and automatic email checking, as well as location services. It's a trade-off.

my iPhone 4 with the ios 5.0.1 is still having major battery problems, didn't fix anything for me. The time update is a problem and I turned it off but the real problem is the 3G. When it is on the battery drains, really fast. It was working fine with ios 5 and then something happened a couple of weeks ago, without me changing anything, and the battery started draining. Now I have to turn the 3G on and off as I use it.

Very strange thing though, I use 123call and 3G, notifications, and the time eat up my battery, and my friends as well. Another friend has DTAC and he has everything on with no battery problems.
