Gx-1 V Nex-7

Featured Replies

Hi again ... to follow on the previous question of my first DSLR.

Have narrowed it down to these two. I leave it to more informed minds than mine to pick the best choice.

Your thoughts please ...

Will purchase in Canada March 2012

Thanks

Bad idea, only you should decide how to spend your money!

Neither camera will have been in the hands of forum members yet, so all you will get is opinions based on reviews.

If you are not planning to buy until March, they should be in the shops by then and you can go and play with them. Which one feels the best in your hands, is the easiest to use? Consider the lens choices; which model provides the best lens choices for the shooting you intend? Which gives you the most for your budget?

(Then buy the GX1).

What are your thoughts on the new Olympus Pen EP3. Just sleek looks or good choice for someone like me coming from point to shoot and no real experience. Just looking something better, small in size and to learn eventually something about cameras and photography. Do total noob.

I like the reviews claiming it's fast, one of my pet hates with point to shoot cameras is the lack of speed. Takes ages to get photo...

It's a lovely camera, and very very fast to focus. But you will need extra cash if you want an add-on electronic viewfinder. But also look at the cheaper EPL-3 which is smaller in size and has an articulated screen. Both are in the shops in Thailand.

Just got this quote from retailers in Canada.

FYI

Thank you for your enquiry. Both of these cameras are new products and are

not yet available from the suppliers. The Sony is expected most likely in

the new year. The Panasonic I have not yet heard when we are expecting

them.

The GX1 will be available with a 14-42mm zoom for $849.99 or the 14-42 power

zoom for $999.99. The Nex7 kit includes their 18-55mm lens for $1399.99.

Just got this quote for the GX1 EVF ...

Panasonics new viewfinder will be $249.99. There are no power zooms available for the Sony.

So - total for GX1 aprox $1250 w/power zoom and EVF

Total for NEX-7 aprox $1400 w/o power zoom.

Power zooms are not a desirable feature unless you just like pushing buttons.k

Agree fully with that. I have a Konica Minolta DiMAGE A200 with manual zoom and a Canon S5IS with power zoom and much prefer the manual. The manual zoom I can go from full in to full out nearly instantly while the power I have to wait for it. Then there is the overshoot/undershoot syndrome of power zooms. The manual I can get the crop done much faster and more accurate.

Been looking around and the EPL looks good. Most likely better value for money considering my needs. Thanks.
