webfact
Police Detect Mafia Movement at Chatuchak Market A deputy police chief accepts there are presence of new groups of mafias at the Chatuchak Market, but they have not conducted any illegal activities so far. Deputy national police chief Police General Panupong Singhara today held a meeting with senior officers from the Metropolitan Police Bureau to draft security measures for Chatuchak Market after its managerial right has been transferred from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to the State Railway of Thailand since last Monday. Panupong said the measures will emphasize on the prevention of chaos or criminal organizations aimed at extorting money from vendors. He conceded two new criminal organizations have been detected apart from one that has been in existence before the change of the market right holder, but there has been no report suggesting they have acted in a coercive manner or caused problems to vendors. In another issue, Panupong updated that the city police are still working with the Provincial Police Bureau 4 to hunt for Weerasak Cheulee, the prime suspect in the robbery at the home of former Transport Ministry permanent-secretary Supoj Saplom. The deputy police chief expected investigators of the case to forward the investigation report to the prosecutors for arraignment against other suspects soon without needing to wait for the appearance of Weerasak. -- Tan Network 2012-01-

Pib
He conceded two new criminal organizations have been detected apart from one that has been in existence... Wouldn't surprise me that "three" mafia groups have been working the market for a while and the only reason the police is now recognizing 3 vs 1 group are involved is because of the TV/newspaper reporting on the subject. Obviously all their activiities so far must be legal. Not so unbelievable. Organized crime often has legitimate assets and businesses. They are needed for money laundering or for cover for the illegal activities. Remember how the casinos in Las Vegas started? Waste removal and construction are other big money makers for organized crime. They force out the honest companies so that they can then charge higher prices. Nisa
Mafia, what here, in Thailand At the least the police are on the ball and have recognised them. There's Uncle Somchai, Cousin Tong,........ Maybe this is actually more of a press release from the mafia, than an actually news story, to let vendors know they still have a chance to sign up for protection and to take advantage of unfair business practices. animatic
Looks like a 3 way gang war for turf in the new market ownership calculation, 4 if you count the police. I won't go shopping there for a long time, too easy to be colateral damage.
ratcatcher
What is their MO at JJ....what do they want/ask for and why ?? 1. They want the stallholders (tenants) to be happy. 2. They ask for money. 3. They can.

I guess the fires at two of the used book seller stalls were just a coincidence and in no way were part of any illegal activities An illegal activity is defined as one when the police are not getting their cut. So the police have been obliged to note the existence of thse people but now can safely turn a blind eye
blackthorn2005
Mafia, what here, in Thailand . IAMHERE
Wouldn't payoffs from 3 groups be better than payoffs from only 1 group ? Play one group against another. Even get one group to do the wet work when a group needs touching up. Pretty much a win win situation there.
