Some useful tips to enhance battery life in iOS 5:

http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/16/ios-5-battery-life-fix-tips/

I checked with my own phone and one thing I found is that under Settings -> Location Services -> System Services -> Setting Time Zone, there was a purple arrow, which indicates that this service was running continuously.

If you have ever used the maps app for any period of time you know nothing drains battery like having location services always on. So any unneeded ones need to be off.

Sync over WiFi is supposedly another huge drain - probably buggy.

Apple really screwed up with iOS 5, I have to say. The features are great but having to manually manage battery life is ridiculous. I hope they fix it soon.

PS: Favorite feature in iOS 5: Swiping on a missed call on the lock screen calls back. That's just awesome. IMO the first time that the iPhone is a better phone-phone than an old Nokia. At least when it comes to calling back missed calls.

I too find it a bit stupid we have to toggle with these settings to save battery life. I heard too where you shouldn't run Ping if you don't have to. Someone it drains the battery.

Good to know - it's in the above tips too. Settings->General->Restrictions->Ping OFF.

I didn't even know Ping was doing anything. Don't want and don't need. For those unaware Ping is some sort of social component of the iTunes store.

I'll report back here tomorrow. Today my iPhone didn't even last through the day - 12 hours exactly and it was dead. Admittedly I did an hour or two of Bluetooth tethering. Still.

But if you turn off location services, you then disable stuff like 'find my phone', ??

No, you can turn it off selectively, one app at a time. I only turned it off for apps where I don't need it, and left it enabled for Find my iPhone, Camera, and some other apps. The location services preferences have a helpful indicator that shows whether an app has used location services in the last 24 hours, or whether it's using them right at this moment.

I found the "set time zone" system app to be using it all the time. Probably a bug, and certainly unnecessary. How often do I change time zones?

Nikster, I just got photo-streaming set up across 3 devices. Seems you can't delete from the photostream?? That could make for some nasty accidents!
