Theres two right backs in your backline.

Carrick and Barry are way short of being international quality players. Like to see Smalling featuring in the finals though. I really rate rate smalling and jones as i would Cleverley but i'd be worried about him being a sicknote. Oxlade-Chamberlain over walcott for me everyday of the week.

I would play Richards as a Left back

All our midfielders barring the young uns are just standard holding players really but very good at that job.

Richards has the pace to play on either wing and is strong up and down,i would like to see both full backs up the pitch and two holding players like Parker and Barry or Carrick just holding and we have the pace with all the others to be threatening.

Rooney is not a shoe-in anymore either but we have not got much else

A reasonable looking team overall, with a couple of exceptions.

1. Richards on the left is insane, especially when we've got two good specialist left backs in Cole and Gibbs. I agree that he is a very good player, he only narrowly missed out on my squad. If I had an extra place for a full back, it would have been filled by him. Smalling isn't dynamic enough to play there either. Again, I do rate him though, but he is much better deployed in the centre.

2. Carrick cheesy.gif

In todays football it is not insane to have players playing in different positions (look at wingers for instance they are always changing sides)but more geared towards flexibility this team could easily be turned into a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3 when it is needed Richards can play at left back o or is his left foot just for standing on?

Richards is a very good attacking defender just because he has not played on the left does not mean he cannot ......i would like to see him attacking and cutting into the box on his bursts.

Sorry, shit team Red, no left back ! Jones ! ( man u, to be expected i suppose), Cleverley, hasn't played all season ( man u, to be expected i suppose), Chamberlain or Walcott ! Barry ! (either in front of the back 4 or not at all) can we take it that as carrick and Smalling are 50/50s, that is because they are man u ?

Cole and Gibbs are also very good attacking full backs, and most importantly, specialists in their positions. If it was a straight comparison between who is better between Richards and Gibbs, in my eyes, Richards is the better player. Personally i'd be uncomfortable playing him out of position like that though. As a result Cole gets the nod.

I like your ideas about flexibility MrRed, it was what I had in mind when I chose my team. It was something we all know we severely lacked in S.Africa.

Can we cram as many Man Utd players in as possible then we might get awarded more penalties. smile.png

See how Chelsea do in the second leg against Barca, but maybe there is case for a back unit containing Cahill, Terry & Cole....??

A huge ask....but let's be objective guys....wai.gif

but i'm pretty sure no team has ever done well in a tournament by removing a player from a specialist position and playing him in a role he has literally never played in his life. he'd be more puzzled himself than everyone else would. which is not to mention that england already have one of the best left-backs in the world, both attack and defence wise, in ashley cole.

it's not a bad idea this. given how truly inept england are at playing possession football they might as well do a chelsea and give all euro 2012 opponents 72% possession and just say 'come and get us'. 11 men behind the ball and cross your fingers etc. biggest problem with that is that england don't have a didier drogba.

No Drogba, but a lot of young, energetic, quick players who can get behind the ball and break from deep.

Cole is going downhill now Stevie, also it is time to start looking to the future and give players a chance.

Or would you prefer the predictability that you have stated above?

SAME OLD!

Using Carrick would hardly be forward thinking either MrRed. He never really progressed from being a talented youngster.

At least Cole, in his time, was (maybe still is) one of the best attacking full backs in the world.

My team for what it is worth.

hart

richards smalling cahill gibbs

chamberlain parker carrick jones young

welbeck

A lot for the future that team, and i am not being biased but carrick has been instrumental in our premier league charge he is very under rated, good passer and good at breaking up play, if only scholes was younger he would be in there instead of jones in fact anyone can think of a good creative player to replace jones in that line up?

you need an out ball though. the only player england really have capable of holding the ball up like drogba is crouch and he's both old and too lacking in pace and mobility.

i'd play cole ahead of micah richards at left-back mr ed. as i reckon would 100% of professional football managers the world over.

cole's not regressed anything like as much as terry, ferdinand etc. he's still mobile and still genuinely top class. no reason to replace him until after this tournament really.

Why?

Whatever team we play we will not win it,so use it as a learning curve for the young uns.The thing is everybody is more concerned about what the press have to say regarding England these days.

If he was willing to come out of retirement, i'd play him, possibly.

hah. don't think even heskey would vote for heskey.

andy carroll has been in decent form the past couple of months. probably not playing consistently enough to be a starter at international level yet but he's getting there.
