I have a Singapore driving license, technically I should be all fine driving around as what i knw, but i always get rejected by the bibs, and whatever happen next, you guys know. Its really bothering me for awhile so i guess it will be better with a thai license, especially if im involved in some accident. anyone know if it is possible to be done with a tourist visa

anyway would it make more sense to drive my singapore car in instead? will be driving in and out instead of flight if i go this route

Some DLs do not require you to take the driving test - only the eyesight test etc.

An international driving permit is acceptable valid for one year - I think you ae only meant to drive in Thailand for 6 months without getting a national licence.

As others have said - getting a one year licence is easy - I'd think you need a "proof of address" certificate from immigration - (allow a couple of days for this).

I would suggest that you cross the 5 year bridge when you come to it.....probably don't need non-imm visa.

Avoid major LTA offices like Pattaya they are usually full of farangs who don't know what they are doing and officers who charge "extras" left, right and center.

I prefere facts, and there arent many above

a tourist can drive on homecountry licence for up to 90 days. you are not a tourist any more if you have Certificate of Residence issued or a non imm visa. IDP same rules.

Most Immigration issue CoR in ten minutes, so allowing a couple of days not needed

All DLT I know of require Non Imm to issue 5 year, please correct me if proved otherwise

To add those DLT's in tourist traps like Pattaya and Phuket seem to be the ones that don't ask the non-imm for one year DL.

I.e. they have relaxed the rules to serve the large number of "tourists" in their area.

Samui though requires non-imm for all DL's based on the requirements posted in the pinned thread.

Bullshit talking, I have 5 year licences from LTA Pattaya, no extra charges was ever mentioned, only got polite and fair treatment there and I started with the 1 year ones same place.

Yes you are right about "battered" farangs, saw many there on both orcations, flips flops & t-shirt + shorts, looked liked they just came from the bar, LOL.

If you dress just a bit nice, that will help matters, don't dress like you just came from the beach bar, Thais are polite and don't say anything but trust me, they think: what a disgusting farang.

When going somewhere public: City Hall, Land office, LTA and other places, I always wear long jeans, shirt & shoes (not the damned flop-flops) and believe me, people (Thais) are looking at you differently and will tread you more fairly/polite.

I got a License from Samui with a 30days tourist stamp.

1year later I got the 5year license in Samui on a tourist visa

Dress good be polite and you get what you want.

I opened bank accs with this DL in three different banks only with a tourist visa, by

dressing properly, and using the DL.

Good for you.

Last week they had a sign up stating you need a non-imm visa.

dated info

new DL can be issued before old expires, been like this for over a year, just did it

as it says in #4, "NON" (visa) can be replaced by certficate of residence

So you just renew your one year DL before old one expired and without Non-Imm visa in Samui ?

You constantly quote rule and law changes here. Could you post some proof ?

Until you do i'd still go with the list that is posted in the DLT wall...

Like he said residence cert should be ok, unless you annoy them somehow.

I renewed before old one expired, the lady even said: "I see you in 5years then"

I'm not disputing your personal experience. All i'm saying is that i'd follow the list in Samui DLT wall if applying in Samui.

You need to have had a 1 year before you will get a 5 year and some traffic offices will not issue a 5 year to someone on a tourist visa, will only give you another 1 year

Pattaya will only give you another 1 year licence on either a short term visa or a visa waiver - and I tried very hard to find a way.........
