December 25, 200520 yr Flood-hit students to get special classes Published on December 26, 2005 Special tutorial classes will be started soon for students in Songkhla province whose schools are closed due to heavy flooding, Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang said yesterday. Chaturon said teachers from schools not affected by floods would teach the special classes. The students need the tutorials because they have missed regular classes and their examinations are drawing near, he said. He expressed concern especially for students in the sixth and ninth grades who are due to sit entrance examinations for further study in new schools. About 600 schools in eight southern provinces, including Songkhla, have been closed due to flooding, but most are to re-open today, Chaturon said. He said the estimated 200 schools in Songkhla that were still flooded were those located near Songkhla Lake or rivers which swelled regularly because of high sea tides. Meanwhile, an elderly monk in Phatthulung who was hospitalised yesterday after being pulled from the floodwater later died of suffocation. Phra Thiang Nijjawaro, 79, was the seventh flood fatality in the province.
