Thailand to introduce its own version of Google Earth next month

Published on Jan 01 , 2006

Thailand will launch its free digital satellite photo services next month under the title of Digital Thailand, the leader of the project said.

Dr Phaisal Santithamnon said the services will be both Web-based and provided on CD-ROMs.

He said the Web-based version, which is for organizations use, will have more details as it will allow users to zoom in to about one metre above the object. The CD-ROM-version, which will be distributed free to the people, will allow users to zoom in to about 15 metres above objects.

Phaisal said Digital Thailand would be similar to Google Earth service but it will be free of charge.

The service has been developed using Nasa's Whirlwind engine, he said.

He said Thailand Digital was developed under cooperation between the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency and Chulalongkorn University.

The services will be launched in February, he said.

Question: Who is it at the Nation that thinks you have to pay for Google Earth? :o
