Possible Drowning Near Kalim

Featured Replies

I posted this to know if anyone who perhaps lived that way had any information.

I was coming from Kamala today around 17:00 p.m., and just before Kalim (and the Ab Zab Restaurant on the left), there were tons of cars, tuk tuks and motorbikes stopped. It was hard to get through, so I pulled over to the side of the road and thought I'd see what the fuss was about. Apparently, there had been two or three people down on the rocks - someone specifically mentioned a ladyboy - who had been swept away. There were police and emergency workers all down near the rocks as well. The tide was rough, and the waves were big and crashing. I stood there for awhile, pretty morbid I know, and just before I left to make my meeting in Patong, I saw one floating, face down body surface. It's really sad. Nothing is in the local rags, which leads me to believe all of the people were Thai. I don't really need sarcastic comments on this post, I was just wondering if anyone had any information. Thank you.

Sorry, the Ab Zab Restaurant would've been on my right. I hope someone knows the location ... it's not far from Nakalay Beach Resort, and this area where the possible drowning took place is blocked off by a fence and a green tarp, for construction purposes I suppose.

Are you're sure this wasn't some kind of training exercise? I read both the water rescue teams and the Thai Navy were conducting training around now.

I came along this road about two hours before Amy and remarked that the waves at that time had very quickly become much higher. I had been on the roof of Nakalay Beach Resort and the noise of the surf had increased noticeably whilst there.

It would not surprise me it people got caught out down on those rocks as people do stop there and fish from them.

yeah, i just saw it on that site. on-lookers said it as two to three people, but that doesn't matter. i continue to reiterate to everyone ... the water is dangerous this time of year, no matter how much of a skilled swimmer or surfer you are ... please be careful and sensible about places near the water you think are safe to sit.

They are reporting that the victim had just been in an argument with her boyfriend. The victim asked the boyfriend to meet her at the spot where she was then reportedly swept into the sea by a large wave just as the boyfriend approached. There may be more to this story.

Yes, I have the same feeling after reading what supposedly happened.

I stopped over there when I saw people pointing to the water and apparently it happened about 30 min before I arrived. There were apparently 5 people that were sitting down on the rocks. Why they were sitting on the rocks with massive waves breaking over them goes beyond me. A big wave came and swept them off the rock. The one victim that drowned was a Ladyboy and could be seen floating in the water from on top of the hill. the other people made it out safely. It was not sure at that point if there was actually a second victim that had drowned.

Very sad situation. The waves have been massive of late and we all should take care around the coastline. The waves can be very unpredictable.
