Thanks for sharing that BigJohnny. A good watch indeed.

I like the quote "The old custom of haggling over the cost may be on the way out. Many merchants are trying to establish one price."

Anyone know what beach was featured?

Bangkok certainly was clean back then and the traffic didnt look too bad either.

Hard to know how sanitised the film was, being a promotional tool for PanAm.

Two observations off the top of my head. The population in the 1960s Thailand was only 25 million-ish compared to 65 milliion-ish now. Also, regarding cleanliness: The use of packaging now is widespread throughout all facets of society. Not so much disposable packaging back then.

Again, thanks for sharing. thumbsup.gif

Three things that amazed me.

The roads looked clean enough to eat meals from.

Every car was British made, when Great Britain was Great, mostly Austin and Morris and not A Japo vehicle in sight.

Hardly a farang to be seen and the very few that were there were strictly visitors and tourists.

Who said; things always change for the better?

I must retrieve my time machine from the garage and go back to the magical times of 50 years ago and beyond.

The Beach is Pattaya, the view is from the Wat that used to be up there, I have the same black&white photo which I took in late 63

Maybe thats why the roads are a mess now they still haven't swept up the remains of those British made 50's carstongue.png .

Maybe it was cleaner in 1960 but I'm sure you would find a lot of garbage in the nearby sois......

And there was a slum area back then too, .

Pretty cool! Of course, PanAm took the cleanest shots they could get. I was here '65-67, nearly that long ago, and I remember a lot of extremely funky sights & smells. Also, even then there were major traffic problems, and driving was not nearly as good as it is these days . . . if you think it's wild now, you'd have to have been in it then to know what I mean. Taxi drivers were the absolute wildest - no meters, every fare bargained for, and always in a huge hurry to get rid of you and on to the next. That said, the city was much more charming then. The Thonburi side was a big swamp, an immediate upcountry experience. Very few highrises. Not many farangs. Ah nostalgia . . . .
