They had one of those promotions at Chiang Mai Airport Mall today.

Various configurations of Isuzu Dmax's. Very Nice !!

I must admit I had never really looked at them closely & was inclined to buy

either a new Ford or Mazda. Then I arrived & found it would be a 3-5 month wait....

Pretty much for any new truck sad.png

Also I will admit the Mazda did not float my boat in person like I thought it would.

But the main drawback on both was the long wait.

We sold our car on the last trip before moving here permanently this month.

So renting at 15k a month did not seem like the way to go.

As luck would have it yesterday I happened upon a 2010Dmax Super Platinum 3.0 Hi-Lander 4DR AT

fully loaded. Only one previous German owner & 30k easy kilometers on the clock.

Was very impressed with the test drive & decided to grab it.

One other thing I did note while looking at fairly new/used trucks.... Is it my imagination or do the Fords & Mazda's

take a pretty bug resale hit the first two years as compared to Isuzu & Toyota?

Anyway as I said the 2012 show had some very nice examples on display.

Yes, they do.

At the moment Mazda has a wait of about 2 months, Isuzu more like 4 months.

well well well.....been looking at the DMAX after so many months of frustration with Ford and Mazda...it IS really nice..must get to a dealer and have a drive...and it looks like a truck! The dash is similar to the BT50!

So has anyone taken delivery of one ...opinions likes, dislikes?

cheers

The Isuzu was also my favorite.

For a short test drive, the soft suspension was quite OK, but vague steering getting used to.

The dashboard is nice, but is the operation practical? Was really bothered me was the lack of safety rating for the new model.

The insurance must be paid in addition for the Isuzu (it´s included by Mazda).

The Mazda 2.2 engine has surprised me with his strength. The sense of space in the Mazda was more generous.

Have ordered the Mazda, because it´s a really nice car, though there is nothing wrong with Isuzu.

I have owned a couple of Isuzu's and was happy with them. Made the mistake of moving to Nissan, regretted that and ordered another Isuzu. After waiting for months, was promised 2, I got fed up and went to check out the Mazda. IMO much more car for about the same money, so cancelled the Isuzu order and ordered my new Mazda.

My friend has been waiting longer for his top of the line Isuzu than I had to wait for my Ranger. He is after the 4-door model and been waiting about 6 months now.

Back to the OP's comment on resale. Since the new Ranger and BT-50 are barely a blip on the current market, it is kind of hard to make a comment on resale yet. If looking at their predecessors, they too never really provided much competition to the Prerunner, Vigo, Navara, D-Max and Highlander either. I will say that the older earlier model Rangers and BT-50's that I have seen look like they are holding up well and there's a lot more beaten up Toyotas and Isuzus on the roads. Once again, if a vehicle wasn't in demand as new, it goes to say that demand for used would be commensurately lower hence sellers having to mark down versus a similarly aged Vigo that just about everyone wanted.

Once Ford and Mazda sort out deliveries and their after sales service actually gets tested, that in conjunction with how these models hold up after a few years and a few 100k on the clock will see if it changes their resale value much.

Yes just what I thought :)

Which is why I ended up getting the slightly used Dmax

No regrets

Yes agreed & I was only comparing older ( 2010 & 2011 ) models to their competition.

The dealer I spoke with when I asked about why the price seemed so low

( a 2010 Mazda BT-50 with only 30k on the mileage )

That they took quite a hit on resale initially

But it may not have been the whole story...You never know ;)

Resale values on certain brands are lower cos of the natives thoughts about those brands. Nothing to do with naff reliability it's what other people (natives) think about one driving the brand. Talked to many a Thai with the same answer. These brands were always cheaper and folk knew it whistling.gif , so not good for your street cred. biggrin.png

You know at the end of the day I am quite happy about it.

I mean I am sure I would have been happy with the new truck too...

But on our last trip we sold our car here & now have moved back permanent so

renting for 6 months ...or more seemed a waste

Also as it turns out I got a model with upgrades I would not have bought.

I was going to buy a new Mazda or Ford 4 door Hi-racer type. But the fairly basic

750k model. 2.2 engine no leather etc.

750k instead spent on the 2010 with 30 kilometers on it bought their high end model.

3.0 turbo, leather, nice GPS/Stereo system, rear camera, dual airbags, nice wheels, etc

So yes at the end of the day.....I'm very happy with this wink.png

Good Luck to you & hope you find something too.
