I'm having a problem with loading pictures onto a web site. The web developer says the images must be 720 X 280-I resize upload and they are not clear and look stretched.

Is it me or the way the site was laid out ? should I purchase higher mega pixel images and downsize them or is there another way ??

I'm clearly missing something so basic.

That is a very odd aspect ratio and surprised you are limited to that. The only way to get it to look right is to crop the image to satisfy that aspect ratio which means cutting off the top and/or bottom of the image if possible. What is the size of the original image, WxH in pixels?

Some possibilities:

When you resize you should keep the same ratios... change either the width or the height to the required size, then see if the other dimension fits the size. i.e.: Keeping the same ratio of width to height; Change the width to 720 and see if the height is 280 or less; change the height to 280 and see if the width is 720 or less.

If the images must be exactly 720 x 280, then you need to crop the image.

PS is it a banner type image?

No it isn't a banner image, the web guy built a front page gallery that we are able to upload pics. Sorry to be so stupid is there a tool to crop an image to this size ? or I crop then resize. I'm so naive with this and the web guy is trying to tell me how to knit a jumper and all I need to know is where to buy it.

As Tywais said, that's an odd size for a photo.

What program are you using to resize the images?

It looks like picresize can resize and maintain the ratio. You would just leave the height blank..... Put in the width as indicated by the requirements and see if the height fits into the requirements. If it is too large, cut the width down until the height is acceptable.

I also saw cropping available on the web site.

I will jump out of this and let Tywais help you so there is no confusion.

I can recommend IrfanView as a good free file viewer with the ability to resize and convert images. Make sure you keep the "keep aspect ratio" checked.
