Hi i have a few questions for the settlement visa.

1) I have been in thailand for 8 months or so now and don't have a job to return to in England once i have the settlement visa. I intend to work for myself as before. But i can get a letter from a freind saying his company will employ me on my return. I will have several thousand in the bank to show with statements.

So is it best to say i will be working for myself or easier just to get a letter from my friend or does it not matter if i have money in my account to support us?

2) I dont have my birth certificate. Will i need to return to England personaly for a new one or can i do it from here?

Also i changed my name when i was around 12 (not sure if through depol) so my surname on my passport bank stamtements etc is not the same as on my birth certificate. Will i need anything else to confirm i changed my name?

I think i have most other parts covered but was a little unsure on these points.

Thanks in advance

I presume you are a Brit looking to take your Thai partner to the UK, rather than a Thai looking to return there.

If the above is a reasonable presumption, you won't need your birth certificate to support a partner's visa application: your passport will be enough. If you do otherwise want a copy of your birth certificate, you can get one from the General Register Office in the UK.

If your friend's job offer is a genuine one, then do get a letter from him confirming this. However, if it's only for the purposes of supporting a visa application and no job really exists, don't use it. Providing you have several thousand in the bank, the visa officer should be satisfied that you have sufficient to support both yourself and your partner until such a time as your self-employment generates a regular income. If you have accounts from when you last worked in the UK, then use these to support the application.

Hi thank you for your info,

My only problem is i am in Bkk and to get the last 2 years accounts would proberly mean me having to return to England as they would prob be difficult for me to get my brother to send them to me as i am unsure where they are in the home but he can obviously look for them.

With the settlement visa if they ask in the interview or on the application how long we intend to stay in England do we say 2 years looking to extend or apply for settlement after the 2 years, as my plans are to see how things have gone after the 2 years and then decide where we want to stay.

My girlfriend wife to be is also 3 months pregnant at the moment does this cause any complications as the baby would be born in England or are the Embassy fine with this? we would also just of married before i submit the appliction how do they look at this or is it not an issue.

Many thanks

For a settlement application you don't have to specify how long you will stay in the UK as the presumption is that you are going to do so permanently.

Your g/f being pregnant will, if anything, assist her application as it is evidence of the genuine nature of your relationship. Once she has her settlement visa, she is allowed use of the NHS, so that she is to give birth in the UK can't be held against her. That a marriage occurs immediately before the visa application is made can have a bearing upon the outcome, but, providing you can substantiate your relationship with your g/f, it should not be a problem in your situation.
