The main thing to consider is that Thais don't have classic cars, only old cars. So anything that keeps it running is fine.

This perception seems to be slowly changing, which is why also the prices of classics are going up.

i beg to differ and claim Thais do own classic cars. i bought this one recently from a Thai owner.

Made me remember the great day I had a ride in one, a 3.8 one though that's a V12 yes ??

I thought the 2+2 was ugly the convertible was a beaut.

it's a 1969, 4.2L, 6 cylinders in a row. i agree that the 2+2 looks like a disease and that the convertible is much more beautiful than the coupΓ©.

when that car was presented in 1961 i was still a schoolboy and ever since then i dreamed owning one. was on the verge of buying one several times but always found a flaw or a reason not to buy. this time it was the Mrs who issued the stern order "you buy this time or else! i don't want to hear you lament another 35 years if only i had bought..."

Well good on ya, Ferrari said it was the most beautiful car, I'm still dreaming of my Ferrari 348, that reminds me must go and check the lottery ticket. rolleyes.gif

Would be nice to see a few more pics of the E Type, looking more at it I can see its more black than BRG, thanks.

it is indeed black and not british racing green. come to think of that i never saw a brg E-type. even when googling you hardly find any. had a brg Porsche 928 once but most of my cars were black.

Some folk in the USA put Chevy V8's in them, hmmmmmmm, now that is a nice thought. smile.png

An 'E' type convertible with a 1.8 toyota engine would do me, auto of course. :)

I always thought the TR7 was a pretty car, but it had a bloody terrible engine in it.

However, drop a rover V8 3.5 litre engine in it, and then you are talking! They used to do the same thing with the Triumph Stag, for the same reason.

You do also have to uprate the breaks!

They called it a TR8 with the factory Rover/Buick 3.5 V8. Bigger brakes etc

The stag had a Triumph designed 3ltr V8 which was a disaster, block design was a Siamese Triumph 4 pot sad.png . Rapidly failed cos weak big ends. Seen many with a replacement Ford 3.0ltr V6 bah.gif .

i think a lot of cars exist which are as beautiful. but only a few which were designed 50 or more years ago. here's a very beautiful one from 1953:

in the Florida moo baan where i lived we had a couple of crazy brothers who did the most astonishing combinations. e.g. a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible with a big block V8 behind the seats, an Oldsmobile Toronado with a V8 in front and a V8 back (both engines with individual gearboxes!), a Datsun 240Z with a 400hp V8...

The TR8 was only made available to the American market IIRC, and Leyland made a Β£900 loss on each model they sold there!

The ultimate classic car. I can remember when the first ones hit the road and they cost around 3000 sterling.

in the U.S. a "number 10" E-type can't be bought for less than 80,000 US-Dollars. some fetch at auctions in excess of 100,000 Dollars and i know of one recent case where the auction price was $120k.

prices in Thailand are of course crazyΒ²! several years ago an E-type in top condition was offered in BKK for Baht 5.5m. i got mine at a lower price because it's a left-hand drive.

fancy prices are also asked for an Austin-Healy 3000.

A good few years ago I was offered a 4.2 in bangkok, somewhere around Lad Phrao, sprayed black by Artex co ltd, toyota engine, wrong wheels, something or other seats, no door or interior trim, holes in the door shut panels and more fibreglass than the local boatyard. All this for only a million.

Anyway when I looked at the photographs of the 5.3 in this thread I had to go and lie down in a darkened room for a while

Perhaps, but there's a few floating around in the UK, drove one once, crap car, ooop's TR7 was a crap car. sad.png

How about this beauty, I saw this at a car show in Hickstead about 5 years ago, last thing I expected to see there. Allegedly 200 mph out of the box.

Still not as beautiful as that E type mind :-)

I don't think that ever saw a production line! I'm sure it's great in a str8 line, but like many 'grunt' cars, doesn't turn well in the corners!

It may be fast, but no elegance to the car whatsoever IMO.

Noooo, not 200mph out the box. The Hemi 426 ci (7ltr) Daytona or Superbird were 425 HP from factory. The NASCAR derivatives were factory tuned to do their stuff, but not road machines.

It was a production motor, Dodge Daytona or a Plymouth Superbird. Both looked the same but slight difference in panel pressings. Worth a fortune now if it has the 426 Hemi motor with matching numbers. whistling.gif

For sure they can be mixed and joined, I take it you never had a UK Ford or a Vauxhall then and a Datsun you never got a chance to put Fibreglass on that it had disappeared while you were mixing it.:D

i had two fibreglass cars, a Stingray 73 in Saudi Arabia and a Callaway Corvette in Germany but never had any repairs. how does one combine fibreglass and metal? special glue or just stick the mats with resin on the metal?

Are you talking about repairs or a fibre glass body bolted to a steel chassis ?

If the original engine is uneconomical to repair and a Japanese donor can be had that has more HP and is easier to maintain then you can see the prespective.

I have a Mk1 Escort with a Toyota 4age 1600 16v in it. It doesn't look out of place in there, and goes a lot better than the original engine.

But fitting a big car with a smaller engine than was origionally fitted (usually auto) always baffles me.

The fibreglass resin and hardener stick to metal panels and are still repaired in this way and you can use fibre matting in holed repairs or nick the top of a biscuit tin and pop rivet it on, once it's filled and get near to hardening you smooth off with a rasp and wet'n dry rubbing down paper until you have the original shape of the said part of the panel, then it's ready for primer / paint etc.

From my days of trying to keep some of my cars together, easier this way to show.
