Thailand Offers Aussie Car Manufacturers Tax Breaks

UPDATE: THAILAND is offering Australian car parts suppliers tax breaks over eight years to tempt them to set up shop there, as the local car industry struggles.

Ford announced yesterday it would sack 440 workers and slow its production line to 148 vehicles a day from November, down from 209 a day.

Workers say the move could spell the end of the Ford Falcon from 2016, as a 25 per cent drop in sales makes it more likely that the company will replace it with the US-made Ford Taurus.

The deputy secretary of the Thailand Board of Investment, Duangjai Asawachintachit, will visit Melbourne and Adelaide from August 6-10, to encourage Australian car companies to set up in Thailand.

Car industry sources say the Thai Government's offer of tax breaks could drive companies to Asia.

The Ford job losses come six months after a $103 million bailout, which was partly funded by the state and federal governments.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said job losses could have run into thousands had the Government not offered bailouts.

why would they want to move to Thailand? Spend millions and millions relocating then hand 51% of your business to a Thai for nothing as you can't own more than 49% in Thailand.

Your name is quite fitting. You seriously think any multinational would setup over here in that case?

'bout time the gas guzzling Falcons died anyway. Keep up with the trend Ford Australia, these 3.0lt engines have been in freefall since the early 90's. Don't believe me, try selling one. Every other maker is shifting with the market demand, small compact ECO cars, CNG factpry fitted, Hybrids. People can't afford to run your cars (and eat as well). If Ford still wants to churn out the Falcon, its their funeral, evolve, thats how Ford was made! The technology is already there, stop flogging a dead horse.

Not only big companies. Any company in selected fields can apply for 100% foreign ownership.
